Just a quick note to ask a couple questions. What is the efffective range using match grade ammo of the 308 M1A? And also of the 223 round in an Armalite AR? Thanks, BIT |
Using match ammo (175 gr loads) in a rack grade M1A, you should be at minute of bad guy to around 500 yards. Beyond that, the dispersion caused by the rifle will cause many misses. A match tuned M1A with suitable ammo should be good to go to 800. That all assumes the shooter is up to the task. 223 round? Which one? 55 gr? 62 gr? 75, 77, 80? |
First, how do you quantify effective range? If you're talking killing power the M1A has the advantage of both bullet size and energy For example 7.62 NATO (M14 & M60 Machine-gun): Bullet Weight = 150 grains Nominal Muzzle Velocity = approximately 2700 fps. Muzzle Energy = 2427 ft. Lbs. Muzzle Energy at 500 yds. = 1576 ft. lbs. 5.56 NATO (XM16E1): Bullet Weight = 55 grains Nominal Muzzle Velocity = approximately 3185 fps Muzzle Energy = 1239 ft. lbs. Muzzle Energy at 500 yds. = 252 ft. lbs. While the 5.56 was at first sold as capable as 7.62 NATO, that simply isnt true The Marines use 7.62NATO for popping bad guys at long range, they. 600-1000 yards kills are not uncommon |
effective range defined In military small arms parlance, that usually means enemy soldiers, not paper. |
Wow, that was helpfulhy.gif Somewhere, long ago in some Army TM or FM, I saw effective range defined as the range where at least 50% hit probability occurs. |
Doubtful they're using commercial ammo though, regardless of whether it's match ammo or not? I've been told by many shooters who shoot them that the .308 gets the hell beat out of it using it for the 1000 yards matches. |
| If you're using match ammo it will depend on well tuned the rifle is and how skilled the shooter is. Both the M-1A and AR-15 are used in 1,000 yard service rifle competitions, and both can shoot quite well. I had a shooter at my last leg match with a service grade M-1A who was having trouble keeping it in the black at 600 because his action wasn't beded and it was moving around in the stock with each shot. I've also seen M-14's hold the black without any modifications because they were tight with a low round count. The AMU is using 90 gr .223 rounds at 1,000 because they buck the wind better than the 80's. |
No. But hating Springfield Armory because they're a bunch of lying posers certainly is. I can assure you that my hatred of Springfield Armory was earned by them in spades. ETA: but hey, what about effective range of the M1A....well, for all practical purposes a good, rack grade M1A is easily usable to 400 yards from the shoulder as long as you practice even a bit. If you're a good shooter, add two hundred. |
