I'm looking to get a form 1 run through the system and was wondering about having the engraving done on the castle nut.

Just looking for some feedback on the thought, I realize that contacting the ATF is the only way to ensure that any engraving is legal.

So has this been done?  would this fit under the category of marking the reciever?

thanks for the input

If you are referring to the actual castle nut and not the buffer ring, than the answer is no, you can't legally engrave on the castle nut.

Have there been people in the past who have engraved on the trigger guard and never gone to jail or had problems.. sure.  Technically I have never heard of anybody ever having legal problems for not engraving at all and I am sure there are not shortage for folks who read some tech branch letters from a couple years back and never engraved at all based on their incorrect legal advice.

However, the only legal spot to engrave your information is either on the actual physical receiver or the barrel and after going through all the NFA paperwork trouble why risk an issue of not engraving a $200 max title 1 AR receiver.  Maybe if you were short barreling an original Sig 550 or FAMAS and would really damage a collectible piece by engraving it,  I could maybe just maybe see the risk but for an AR receiver, just go for the side of the magwell.

My 2 cents anyway

Thanks for the feedback James.

I see what you're saying, and it's mostly what I figured (unfortunately).  The main reason I ask is because I'm not building an AR, it's going to be a Sig556, so while not collectable it is a little more valuable than an AR lower.

FWIW, the serialized part is the upper receiver on the Sig 556.
