Does the engraving info have to be readily visible, or simply accessible?

Visible. For instance you can't put it under pistol grip on the tab.

Actually the technical, and legal, term is "conspicuous"

By definition, does that infer that it must be visible?

My understanding is that it should be visible to someone you hand it to without removing parts. If you look at the examples from places that do the engraving, you'll see some folks put it in places not easily viewed without knowing where to look, but they are in plain sight.

Examples:

Orion Engraving

Veritas Engraving

(I'm currently having Veritas do one on the magazine lip for me)

For those that don't know what a dictionary is conspicuous

This is why I had "cal - 5.56" engraved on the lower below the trust info.

I have a spikes lower with "multi".

My Mega lower is also multi, but the caliber marking is visible on the barrel, if you look through the holes in the handguard.  It is visible without disassembly.
