I'm looking to get a pair of clear shooting glasses. I'm looking at Oakley M-frames and the Sawfly Revision Eyeware. Are the Oakley's really worth the extra money? I use a pair of Half Wires now for day time shooting.

Eye Protection

Its amazing what is passing for eye protection these days. Spoke to an eye surgeon and he said the protection must go down to the cheek… think about it, whatever you are doing what you need protection from is something (usually) impacting/detonating or breaking up between your waist to your nose.

He has seen a lot of eye injuries from fragments entering the eye from just below the glasses and above the cheek. I checked out some gun manufactures shooting glasses and was amazed at the opening they had from my cheek area to the lens (but they protected the forehead pretty good). Of course this could have been a result of my face structure, they might work for you… but make darn sure you have a strong cheek weld to the bottom of the protective lens.

I am eye protection pro-use nazi as my .45 kaboomed on me and I had some small blood speckles on my nose. If one of them hit me in the eye, suddenly I would have been a year round pirate.

Anyway, my .02 cents on eye protection. Don’t skimp on it and in many 3 gun shoots they require certified protection, not just sunglasses. And always wear them at a shoot, I have been smacked a number of times by “stuff” there… never drew blood but a hit to the eye would have been terrible.

Buy a bunch of cheaper, but certified protection.  Keep them everywhere, car, bag, shop, etc.  You can easily get 10 pairs of quality glasses for the price of bling foakleys.

I know, I used to wear Oakleys too.  I had a junk bin full of oakley parts.  Kind of stupid for "sports glasses" to disintegrate when sunscreen comes in contact with them.  They fall apart doing cannonballs into the pool too.  Complete junk.  They are about 99 cents of plastic and good marketing, just like HK.

I wear these, clear and dark:
