Is it possible that a solid upper receiver rather than one with the removable dust cover could be made or is this not allowed by the design? I don't know if it is still possible to disassemble the rifle and clean it without taking the dust cover off or not. I thouhgt that it is. So, if it is possible to disassemble and clean the FAL without taking off the dust cover why doesn't someone make a solid one piece upper receiver without a removable dust cover but with a built in picatinny rail? This would seem to have some rather appealing advantages. Perhaps if it were one solid piece and beefed up at the barrel attachment point then it might be more feasible to do an aluminum upper. If not aluminum then someone should get around to doing one in titanium. [email protected] |
The FAL is MUCH easier to clean given the removable dust cover. Trust me on this.
IMHO, not enough advantages to offset the expense of re-tooling and manufacturing an item of very likely limited interest.
Maybe. The Aluminum uppers that have been tried have been spectacular failures (KB!). Of course, these were of the conventional design. I don't know what kind of weight savings could be expected from a solid aluminum upper, but it would certainly be bulkier, not to mention the possibility of galling due to the steel bolt and carrier. As for Titanium, the machining costs would be horrendous as compared to steel or aluminum. Interesting idea, but I doubt there's much demand. |
| The aluminum FAL receivers failed at the locking shoulder. The shoulder was pushed back in the receiver until excessive headspace caused a KB. So, adding more material in the cover area will be of no structural value. Titanium would suffer the same fate because of its relative softness. |
I bought one of their aluminum lowers when they were on sale a few months ago. Its nice, no problem installing parts. If looked at real closely there are machining marks visible on the sides. I've heard of others having the same problem. I'm sure they would have replaced it if I had asked but it really isn't that noticable. |
