Can anyone tell me exactly how hard it is to build an FAL from a kit?  I would like to do it all myself, but I'm told you need a good smith to do some of the work.

Not hard at all, but you need some fairly specific tools.  Everything you need to know about building can be found at www.falfiles.com.  My best advice is to find somebody in your area who has done it before and have them help you.

TMIX,

You can do this yourself.  I'm building one right now for a former co-worker and I just happened to take some pics along the way.  I'll have them up in a few hours that show barreling and headspacing.  It is an Imbel kit on an Imbel receiver.  The only essential FAL-specific tools I would recommend is the barrel wrench, headspace guages and a tool that DSA sells that enables you to remove the extractor during the headspacing procedure. Beyond that, a vise, breaker bar, file and small hand tools are required, most of which can be borrowed if need be.

OK,  This is going to take longer to load than I thought, so maybe tomorrow I'll have it on line.

Here is one pic, at least.

In the upper left are my headspace guages and locking shoulder pins.  In the upper right is a steel welding rod that I threaded and screwed into the front sight to help me time/align the barrel to the receiver.  I made this vise and drilled a channel through two pieces of oak pallet that serve to hold the barrel in the vise.  I love this rig.  It isn't fancy, but it gets the job done.

Notice the electrical tape around the reciever.  That is to prevent marring the receiver when I attach the receiver wrench to this point and start cranking it down and time the barrel to the receiver.

This took a .261 locking shoulder, btw.

If you are in the El Paso area, I'll hook you up.  I love building these things.  If you are further East in Dallas Ft Worth, there are a number of guys from the FalFiles who would probably be glad to help you.  They do FAL assembly get-togethers every so often.

Jim

Here is the gallery.  While I was putting it together, I realized I forgot to put the handguard ring on, which means I'll have to unbarrel it and slide it on.

Nice gallery and great looking rifle.  Bummer about the handguard ring.  That is the one error I've managed to avoid but I've made just about every other mistake.

Hey Omar, I have about had it with that damn rod I use in conjunction with a micrometer to determine LS size. Where'd ya get them purty headspacing pins? I need me some of them. Nice home made set up...neccesity is truly the mother of all invention.

I got them from MSC.

www.mscdirect.com/mscProductSearch.process?RestartFlow=t&RowsPerPage=15&searchmanufpartno=&dispmanufpartno=&operator=AND&QuickFlag=1&Merchant_Id=1&query=pin+guage&search_cat=K&x=10&y=7

I have .254 through .273  The price wasn't bad, but I don't recall the total cost because I bought these a while back.
