Ok, so I have the FAL para model. I want to take it apart wthout removing the top cover but as far as I can tell, the cover must come off to remove the bolt and carrier.

Is there a way to remove the bolt and carrier without removing the top cover of the Para model FAL?

Unless your top cover has a removable recoil spring guide you will
have to remove the top cover to remove the bolt carrier.

Is your top cover one of the DSA scope mounts?

I don't own a Para FAL but I do own a Std FAL and have a Para kit on the way.

Cheers,

If it is a newer DSA scope mount cover you can. If it's a standard cover it has to come off all together, you just slide the cover back and the bolt/carrier come with it.

On the newer scope mount cover you can push the recoil spring guide forward maybe 1/8-1/4 of an inch and the pull it down slightly from the notch in the cover. After that the bolt carrier will slide out freely. Safety glasses might be a good idea the first time you try this, or every time working with springs IMHO.

WIth the new DSA cover, will it retain an optics zero when removing the bolt and carrier?

I just dont want to disassemble the weapon and lose my zero, while having the DSA cover on there.

There is no reason it would change unless you take the scope or mount off too.
