Just bought a FAL 50.00 and had two questions (forgive the newbie if these questions were asked before):  First, is there a list of serial #s somewhere that will tell me approx. when my FN FAL was made; and second, the one I have has the "FN universal" type muzzle brake that can also be used as a grenade launcher- are these more or less common/desirable than the birdcage type FS.  I know the "desirable" part is subjective, but again, I'm a FAL newbie, so please, be gentle

First of all, there is not a list of serial numbers generally.  You can find out a lot more about yours but you need to give more information.  Is yours a genuine FN?  If so, who is the importer and what is the configuration?

It is a genuine FN, marked:
        Fabrique Nationale Herstal
        Made in Belgium
        Gun South Inc, Dunnesville, AL.
And it is a model 50.00.

Sweet!  My guess is early to mid 80's, but you'll likely get a lot more info by asking over at the FALfiles.  There were several different importers and I think GSI was early 80s.

Since your gun is a true FN-FAL, would it be too much if to ask, how much did you pay?

The last one I saw was going for around $2500.

Spambo, I paid $2,800, which I thought was okay since it was unbelievably clean....a SOLID 99%.  You considering jumpin' on the one you saw?  Regards, Cloak

About the Belgian muzzle device... That is the "correct" one, but I prefer the Stoll that comes on the STG.  DSA sells them for cheap and you can get the "short" one which is nothing more than a cut down version of the Stoll.  Its what I have on my pre-ban para carbine.  Its functional and looks sweet!

That does look sweet...it's looks like a slight variation of the AR's Vortex FS.
