have you mounted your optic on the handguard? if so did you find it solid?
contemplating that arrangement on a NO-BAN folder. beautiful rifle! love those L4 mags too. very nice!

i've no trijicon but here's my SA58 w/ M8 6x42 mildot and for contrast my first FAL build (only needs LS now!) a shorty i just barreled last night.

S1 i'm still drooling! does it shoot as good as it looks?

FALna45

I have mounted it on the handguards, but never shot it that way.  I wanted to keep the weight off the front so I left mounted it on the scope mount.  It shot very well.  I was also using it on my AR.  I thought it worked better on my AR, so now that's where it stays.  It was quick and accurate on the FAL, but for some reason I like and do better with irons.  I still like to use optics.............

so I went with this

coulter6 that is a sweet set up!  how is your cheek weld with the ACOG?

Remman,
The DSA ACOG modified mount puts the scope quite close to the receiver so I can get a good cheek weld.  The DSA X-Series stock is higher than most of the other FAL stocks and puts your cheek higher.  This is a great combination.

Eye relief is good as long as you remember you're firing a .308, just have to be careful not to get to close or it will hit your shooting glasses.  I find that I have enough room, just sometimes in the heat of firing, I forget where my eye is and get a little close.  I really like the setup.

Best,
coulter6

I was going to scope one of my FAL's, but decided to get a Remington 700 in .308 instead. My first bolt gun. You guys have some REAL NICE weapons there!

coulter6 why did you go with the TA-01B, instead of a TA-11 variant?

I've struggled with optics for quite a while now and have come up with two different solutions.  First, let me describe what I preceive at the vital issues.

1.  Compact.  No larger than 6" and preferably smaller.
2.  Light weight.  No more than 8 oz.  I'm not into carrying more than I must.
3.  Fast target aquisition.
4.  4-5" eye relief.  I can't figure out why folks like to be right behind their optics.
5.  Forgiving eye relief.  I want to be able to switch between heavy clothing and a t-shirt.
6.  Something with enough maginfication to help me see to 300 yards but not so much that it alters my focus during snap shots.
7.  Self luminous reticle.

There is nothing on the market that matches all of these.  They are all either too heavy, too big, no magnification, too short eye relief or no lighted reticle.  Look at the specs of your preferred optic and you'll find it lacking in one of the above categories and probably more than one.

The closest I was able to find is the Leupold 2.5X compact scope.  Its listed a 4.9" eye relief but you get full FOV anywhere from 4 to 6 inches away.  It weighs a tad over 6 oz and is VERY compact.  Being fixed power, it should be pretty durable.  Optics are crystal clear and I ordered the heavy duplex reticle which makes it incredibly fast on to target.

The advantages of long eye relief can't be overstated.  To use this scope, you always keep both eyes open.  You have full field of vision from both eyes.  With only 2.5x magnification, there is little enough difference between eyes that you can look through the scope with the dominant eye and not loose focus with the other.  Once you get the hang of it, its remarkably natural.  Throw the rifle to your shoulder and the target is nicely centered in the reticle but you still have your perifrial vision.

Now I did lean something at the NRA convention show.  The Trijicon compact ACOG 2x will also work.  Its listed at only 2.1" eye relief but I got to play with one at the Trijicon booth and I don't know what they are talking about.  The minimum eye relief may be 2.1", but I had the thing over 6" away before FOV started to diminish.  I was stunned and pleasantly surprised.  Now I've got to figure out which reticle I want and then see if I can track one down.

Remman,
I originally was looking at the TA11C and saving my pennies for the anticipated purchase; then along came a GREAT deal on the TA01B that included the FAL mount (less than half the price of a TA11).  Being an impatient kind of guy, I jumped on the deal.  The eye relief isn't really an issue; although, like I said, you have to be mindful of it.   The Trijicon specs say 1.5" of ER but that's pretty conservative, more like 2-2.5" of usable ER.

The TAO1B fills the current need and maybe eventually I'll be able to afford a TA11.

Cliffy109 has a great analysis of the scope needs, I used a similar rationale when looking at the ACOG.   I do own a Leupold Scout scope, but never thought about it on the FAL.  I'll give it a try when I get home tonight.  The only drawback is the power, my eye aren't what they used to be and 4x is better than 2.5x.  There are trade offs we have to make, I chose eye relief.

I tried a scout scope but wasn't able to figure out a good mounting solution.  Its also a bit long for what I wanted.  The compact 2.5X can be had as either a shotgun scope with 50 yard paralax or a rifle scope with 100 yard paralax.  I got the rifle version with the heavy duplex.  I have it mounted to an ARMS mount with medium aluminum rings.  You'll need the medium so the ocular will clear the mount.

My inspriation for this was using a Steyr Scout for hunting season.  I'm addicted to this style of sighting.  I did get the FAL out into the field for a day of hunting with the 2.5x optic.  I saw several deer between 25 and 300 yards and threw the rifle up on all of them.  Each was saved by its lack of antlers, but it gave me a good sense of how the system works and I couldn't have been more happy with the results.

any thoughts on the useability of the 3x compact acog with the "1.5" eye relief on a FAL?
4/30/2004 5:08:52 AM EDT
[#18]
The 3x really does have too short an eye relief for my tastes.  The 2X is extremely forgiving when it comes to this and has a wide range of usable distances, but the 3X seemed pretty limited.  All the full sized ACOGS were WAY too close for me.

I actually think it has to do with the difference in how your eye responds.  With both eyes open on 2X, it seems like both my eyes still have proper focus and that shifting concentration doesn't require any effort.  The higher power seems to need a good bit more concentration so I really noticed when the FOV began to shrink.

Dude, $1000 scope and a 5 dollar paint job?
Maybe I am a bad judge of high-end camo jobs, but that looks goofy.
Nice scope rig, though. (thats the one I want someday)

Dude, don't panic...the paint is bowflage...it comes off.

AND, the paint works in the bush.   That color scheme was more for early spring--lots of brown, dead grass and mud...some green.  Now it's more of a woodland camo to match the green foliage.  Mid-summer it will be more of a tan or deadgrass/straw scheme--during the dry months.  It's not supposed to be pretty but it does work.

My MBR is not a safe queen...she gets used in the field...a lot.

Shawn1, what kind of hnadguard is that and where did you get it.  Also, what kind of rear sight is that and where did you get it.  Plus what kind of accuracy are you gettin out of it.

Thanks Chewbacca.  I got the Rail Interface Handguard and Tactical Para Steel Rear Sight w/knob from DSA.  As far as accuracy goes, I shot at 100 yards once and got half inch groups with a scope.  Beside that, I have been shooting at 25 yards and overlapping groups with irons and a scope.
