I'm wanting to purchase a 9mm SBR upper for my RR in 9mm.
I would like find one that my suppressor will slide a little but under the handguard. Will I have to change anything on the lower besides the mag block? Will the H2 buffer and other lower parts work? What are my options as far as purchasing a complete 9mm upper that will function good in FA? Thanks |

Of course, they all run perfectly, because they are Colt. My fave 9mm upper is my 7"bbl DOE upper. The one non-Colt upper I own is an LRM M169, an integrally suppressed upper in 9mm and .22RF. It also runs perfectly. |

Listen to Tony when it comes to advice and when it comes to the AR/M16 Colt is the way to go BUT the only problem is Colt does not have the flat top 9mm upper or offer a railed upper. Love the DOE BUT you can build out a unique Colt upper also for alot less starting with a Colt 9mm SMG parts kit. David Spiwak has one right now on his site. I am a fanatic for the flat top so I built my Colt 9mm shorty upper using a : 1) Colt M4 A3 flat top upper 2) Larue 9" rail 3) Colt 10.5" chrome lined barrel 4) Colt FA bolt/carrier (ramped by M60 joe) Now you may ask will the 5.56 M4 upper work? YES YES YES. I know I know some folks don't like it but I have to go Colt and I had to have a flat top. I have a mark18 OPERATOR (all colt Ken Elmore mod except for the rail)Colt HB socom bbl upper built by SAW so I wanted to match up with that upper. I did not even have to add the 9mm shell deflector, I have absolutely no problems. I use a bottom loaded HAHN mag block (do not use colt 2 piece pinned blocks), Colt 32 rd factory mags, Pro mag 32rd mags, and 100rd C-mags and all work fine but the Colts are superior. I use a Colt H3 , YES H3, 5.4oz buffer instead of the 9mm buffer and what is great is the sliding weight counters bolt bounce perfectly in my 9mm and the 5.56 mk18 upper so I don't have to swap out buffers. I also use the standard M16 hammer because of the perfact work of M60joe BUT definately install KNS gen 2 pins. If you email me I can send you a photo of my Colt 9mm upper and matching Mk18 (Ihave a problem loading pics here). As for your upper if you go the Colt path you can follow me or use the Colt6450 a1 upper and build out using a YHM or some rail that is round and large enough to accept a can tucked under it because a Larue is not. YHM is sized large and the diamond rail is real nice! Also keep in mind that you will NOT need the FSB(mine is removed and looks fine) so no need to worry about that. In addition have M60joe add the tungsten weight to your bolt if you are going with a suppressed upper and ask Tony or M60joe but you also may want a heavier spring considering the gas spike with the can on a short barrel. Good luck and BTW I own a Colt M16A1 as my MG |

That's a sweet set up!
I have a M16a1 lower in 556. I would like to be able to use a .22, 556, & 9mm upper with out having to change too much stuff on my lower. I don't mind changing the buffers, but having to change more than that would be a pain in the ass. I really like the Gemtech Talon upper, but it will only work with their suppressors. I would like to build an upper to replicate the Talon, but to work with my AAC Tirant. |

Edit to add: All my cans are simple 1/2x28 threaded cans. No special mounts. It makes using them on a variety of calibers pretty simple. TRG |

Wait, what about the hammer notch? I understood that the existing lower was not 9mm, but that he planned to remove the existing upper, install a 9mm magblock, and pin on the 9mm upper? Wont the existing (5.56) hammer also need to be modified to prevent it from hanging on the 9mm bolt? TRG No need to modify the hammer on a milspec full-auto FCG. There is no such thing as a "9mm FULL AUTO hammer" –– Colt uses the same FA design for all calibers, and it will not hang on a full-auto 9mm bolt. Some folks get confused because there are two different SEMI hammer designs –– 9mm and 5.56 –– so SBRs do need to swap the hammer to the SEMI 9mm, which also functions in 5.56. But that does not hold true for FA FCGs. |

I cant tell it if comes with the BCG or not, so I sent him and email to find out. |

As with most, they were lightly used. Mostly rack wear. The ones I've had over the years didn't seem to have much wear on the bolts at all. |

If I had an M16, I'd be talking to this guy on Sturmgewehr about his DOE upper. They're very cool.

If I were to buy one of the Colt 9mm Uppers from David, would I need a mag block? If so which one would be recommended? I've had good results with Hahn blocks. They use colt style mags. Which means you can use the beta mag. The VMhigh tech mag block lets you use uzi mags. It just depends on what mags you want to run. |

I had to tweak the ejector a bit on mine, but after doing that it runs flawless. Super easy to install/uninstall, and lets you use the normal magazine release. |

No allen wrench needed w/VM. I have tons of UZI mags incl. 2 72 round drums. +1 for the VM. Though in my experience, the Uzi mags are not quite as reliable as the first-gen Colt factory mags. I use both a VM and, for Colt mags, a now-out-of-production Crossfire block. It is bottom-loading but no allen wrench needed, either: It uses a spring-loaded ball detent. Once you adjust it to your magwell, it stays in place perfectly. For the Colt/Crossfire system, I've got a dozen Colt mags, plus two 72-round Suomi drums and a 100-round Beta drum. |

...the Uzi mags are not quite as reliable as the first-gen Colt factory mags.
tony_k is 100% right, plus the Colt mags have last shot bolt hold open. At the time I got the 9mm SMG upper I could buy at least 10 to 1 UZI vs Colt mag$$$$$$$$$. I think now they are le$$ and even off-brand Colt-type mags are available. Tony will correct me on this. |

VM blocks are a nice, simple solution if you have Uzi mags, but if you are shelling out the cash to 'do it right' and go with a DOE upper, get a Hahn or other block with the last round BHO and use the Colt mags. |
