What is your opinion about these two rifles?  If you had to choose one, which one would it be?

as much as i love my HK-91(had it since '85) i'd have to take the standard stock(not the papr model) over the HK. It seems to be a tad more accurate and had the advantage of the last round hold open. I use to own a real FN HB and am still kicking myself for getting rid of it a few years ago. It was extremely accurate out past 500m especially with the bi-pod and portugese ammo   :-)

If you're talking about pre-ban rifles I'd probably give a slight nod to the HK91.

If we're talking about the current crop of clones, I'd go with the FAL hands-down. Much better quality of parts, more accessories, more fun to shoot.

For a shooter/weapon/hunting rifle I would go with the FAL. For collector's value or cool factor I would get the HK-91. The ergonomics on the HK are horrible, whereas the FAL's ergonomics are almost as good as the AR-15's.

i would definately go for the fal, cheap, i mean waaay cheap mags, new for 8-10 bucks, and they are extremely reliable, i have a carbine unit i built, have 400 bucks in building it, have not cleaned it for 2500 rounds, top that hk, i do like the hk's too, but the fal beats it hands down, the hk may be a slight more accurate, but the fal can be worked on by mentaly slow person with no tools, if the hk breaks, trigger mechanism, you will need a bit more expertise for the fix on that one, the fal is also built like a tank, way thick metal, mostly machined parts, the hk has a lot of stamped parts, and is welded together, both are really good guns, but the fal gets the wink here

I've had my HK-91A2 since I was stationed at McClellan AFB in 1985. This rifle has NEVER malfunctioned on me.

I added a William's set trigger assy to it after I got back to the states in 89. Best mod I ever did to any of my rifles. At set, trigger break is at 2.5 lbs.....sweet.

At the time that I was looking for a paramilitary rifle to add to my collection, I was looking at the Fabrique Nationale FAL, Springfield M1A, and the Heckler Koch 91. The price of the Springfield was way too much for my airman's paycheck at the time. The FN FAL's accuracy was no better than the HK's.

I ended up buying my HK for $600.00 NIB when I was TDY to Anchorage, AK. NEVER been disappointed since.

Thanks for the replys.  I have to say, range and accuracy being roughly equal, I'd have to go with the FAL.  When you add in the logistics of maintenance and spare parts, including mags, it looks like the FAL wins hands down.  From the other threads I'm getting to start with an Imbel reciever and go with a STG-58 or G-1 parts kit.  How much does it cost to get the barrel mounted and headspaced?

I too have both guns.. Matter of fact of couple of each.. :) FAL is the way to go all around, like most have mentioned above.

I recently bought dsa's stg-58 model, it was 795+15 for shipping, and FFL transfer fee. If you compare this price to a grade I kit (250), the various USA parts needed (200), upper receiver (225), plus all the tools you'll need to put one together. Or the cost of a gunsmith to build it for you. With one or two kit builds you can't do it as cheap nor as good (imo) compared to what dsa offers for the money. Get yourself a dsa stg-58... :)
