S&W 1911 45ACP, I am using Berry's 185 gr RNHB, 4.8 gr. Accur #2, CCI lg pistol primer, various cases. Loading to COL 1.260 and having feed issues with cartridge jamming into chamber, wrinkles case and will not chamber about every 5-6 rounds. No other load, factory or hand, at this COL does this in that weapon. What am I missing. I have experienced this problem with 9mm HP loads occasionally as well. Will lengthening or shortening COL remedy this situation? Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated. NAD

What dies, press are you using?

Seating bullets and crimping in the same die?

What OAL does your data call for?

I load to 1.250 OAL to be sure cartridge is not over length.

Do you have a case gauge?

If not, how do they fit in the chamber by pulling the barrel and dropping them in by hand?

Using Lee equipment, FCD, and yes I have dillon case gages, all fit the norm, case length etc. Also cartridges fit chambers when dropped in. I can't tell if it the COL or something to with the case or crimp

I went to the Berry site to see the bullet in question...lightweight  bullet and you ststed 1.260" ??

Looks like you have a lot of bearing surface ahead of the case mouth... I would shorten them a ggod bit till they drop into the chamber freely..

It could be the bullet dia., if it is is over size, greater than .452 can cause FTF.  There are some cowboy bullets out there that are .453 & .454 dia.

As the S&W 1911 is just like the COLT M1911 and M1911A1.......well, you know that it ain't all about COAL.

What will work in mine may not in yours.

Some guns need "tuning."  Magazine lips, feed ramps (frame and barrel), re-coil spring weight, slide to frame "fit", and not to mention the cartridges themselves.

Keep at it..........Good luck.

Aloha, Mark

Playing with the OAL may help.  Last time I loaded 185gr LSWC bullets I was running closer to 1.270" for an IPSC load.  A couple guys I was shooting with at the time were running similar lengths to get the rounds to function correctly.  With my lead round nose load I run them at 1.253".  I'd say try a few shorter and longer and see what happens.

I down loaded my 1911 problems database to my new computer. You may be to long on your COAL. I had the same problem when I was using a  round flat nose lead bullet to shoot at pin shoots. I had the COAL at 1.250 and I had FTF. I set my COAL at 1.205 and no more FTF. Try that and good luck.
