During a shooting event last week my M1A experiended FTF several times (round partially stripped from the magazine and then hit the side of the chamber). I think it might be a magazine problem but I had the same problem with three different magazines. Magazines are one asisan and two reported USGI magazines Ammo is Aussie surplus F-4 Any thoughts? |
Unless the mags are known to function properly, you really haven't proved anything. You didn't say if this had ever happened before, so I will assume it has not. Either lend someone your mags to try out (assuming their m1A functions properly with good mags), or try someone else's proven-to-be-good mags. Check the gas system to make sure everything's clean, tight, and dry, properly lube rifle, and maybe replace op-rod spring. |

It has happened a few times. I haven't fired the gun very often, two or three trips to the range 20 to 30 rounds each trip. When it happened before I figured it was the mag or the gun needed some time to break-in. My BIL took it to a gun shop where he works. It appears that the op rod has been hitting the receiver when it recipicates. He compared it to some other M-1A receivers and he said it appeared that they had not finished machining the area when it was built. Which might explain why I have never been able to remove the op rod. He did get the op Rod out and was able to remove some material from the channel where it was hitting and he smoothed the channel as well. We think this may have caused it to short stroke. Anyone else have this problem? |
Well, that's a new one on me, but I'm no expert on the subject. I hope you did not void your warranty by doing the modifications, though. |
| I would make sure the "2 reported USGI magazines" are in fact, USGI magazines. Relatively easy to do. Some of the after market ones are really bad. I have worked on 3 for a buddy, and each one had the follower spring in backwards, and the magazines lips were so soft they could be bent with my fingers. |
Good question, but since the OP said M1A, I asumed Springfield Armory Inc. as original Mfr. Perhaps that assumption was unwarrented. |
It was made by Springfield Armory about 5 years ago. I got it from SA in exchange from a SAR8 that had issues. My BIL still has it and I don't know the serial number. I figured it was a minnor issue, magazines related, when I asked him to look at it. If I had known it might be more serious I wouild have sent it back to SA. Their customer service is usually great. Not bashing SA just asking if anyone elese has had these issues. My BIL called last night and it seems to be working well now. I he ran several magazines through it without issue. |
