Even though a bit dated, this is a pretty good vid of the F-35 active DAS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1NrFZddihQ&feature=player_embedded
In one of my "previous life's" I actually got to demo the visor system of the F-35. Very impressive capabilities that eliminate all deficiencies associated with standard I2 devices. Besides the Day/Night capabilities, the DAS system using visible track mode was the single most important advantage I observed in a modern age dog fight. Some still argue the modern age aerial fights will always engage at BVR, but then again we still put a gun on the F-22 and F-35 for reason. Early on the Navy had a fit when they found out the initial F-35 Navy version was not going to have a gun. That was soon remedied. Vic |
| My father was fortunate enough to be involved with the development of I2 devices in the A-10 and the compatibility upgrades that took them from glow sticks velcro'd around the cockpit to fully NV compatible cockpits. Throughout the course of all of this, he was privy to information regarding what would be the next generation of aviator I2 devices. While the F-35 systems were nothing more than drawings on a chalkboard at the time, he was able to play with the panoramic systems that preceded stuff like this and give feedback on the current systems, the future systems that he had experience with, and the developing technologies that would lead to things like the visual tracking, full NV coverage, etc. I saw an article about this a while ago and his response was, "huh, they finally did it. We talked about this stuff with the engineers when we were testing all the cockpit updates. I wish we had that in the A-10." This technology has been in development for a time, but it's nice to see things finally coming to fruition as a total system. The capabilities these give to fighter pilots is pretty amazing. |

I agree with that statement. DAS is a fixed focus system with 1x mag which is less useful in BVR..

Vic Unfortunately it's contradictory to official policy of Lockheed Martin which lets the F-35 rely on BVR combat (flying capabilities) |
