Hi guys I am new to reloading and have a dumb question. I was lucky enough to score a few 8lb jugs of Win231 powder the other day. I bought them from a reputable sporting goods store. However, when I got home and opened them there was no foil or paper seal under the lid. The lid just screwed right off and the jug was open under that. I was under the impression that there should be some factor seal? Does winchester seal it's powders or just leave them open like this. I weighed the jug and it came in well over 8lbs so I am not too worried but though I should check.  Thanks!

Probably someone wanting to look at the powder and wasn't interested. I've had a couple of bottles of powder like that and had no problem as long as they are stored right.

Thanks for the reply. I just thought it was weird that all 3 jugs were like that and was wondering if Winchester just doesn't seal them.

They came with a thin white seal over the top under the lid.

Sounds like they are missing.

If that gunpowder is on display in the store where customers can handle the bottles and open the seals, I would take it back and tell the store that I want sealed bottles.

They won't like it, and you might have to show the manager that their product is being compromised.  There are anti's out there that will mix or exchange gunpowder given a chance, they've said so.

Always check for a factory seal before buying, same as you should be doing for food at the grocery store.

I'd take it back and have them replace it or give you a refund, the possibility that it's been tampered with are too great to risk for the price you paid.

Thanks for the help guys. These were not on display. They have to go to the back and get them for you. Two of the bottles had a round foam/paper like piece stuck in the top of the lid when opened. The third bottle had the foam piece still over the mouth of the bottle. Does Winchester not use the traditional foil seal like other companies? It seems that maybe the foam/paper piece is the seal and on the two cans was just not securely attached and got stuck in and came off with the lid? I will try to post some pics tomorrow.

Hodgdon and Winchester use the same foam seal that says "sealed for your protection" and very often comes loose when you unscrew the cap.

This happens to me every time.

These ones are white but do not say sealed for your protection. The foam is bigger than the ring and gets stuck above the very last thread of the cap at the top. I'll get some pictures up on my lunch break today.

Only the top of the seal says "sealed for your protection" (my one pound containers, rifle and pistol )- did you pull yours out of the cap?

Thanks for the pics! That isn't the "sealed for your protection" - for my one pouders, it was on the container itself and the cap still had the ones you are showing - hopefully someone can check there 4 or 8 pound containers and advise - or simply call Hodgon and ask them!

That would be great if someone could check. It is Winchester not hodgon though. And yes I pulled that out of the cap and it has no writing on it. Just a white disk that looks the same on both sides. Pictures 2 and 3 show it after removed from cap.

On the third jug, this white disk was loosely stuck over the container and did not come off with the cap. So I am wondering if it is intended to be the "seal" and just doesn't do a very good job and often comes off with the cap?

From discoloration on the white seals, it appears that is the way they were shipped - I think you are GTG. If you go to Hodgdon reloading center, they have data for Hodgdon, Win , IMR and I believe they must be related, see: http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp   If you go to Win Powder site, they reference also Hodgdon and IMR. My 4 pound Clays is half gone, so if it had the "sealed for your protection" I probably threw it away. In 2006 Win licensed their powders to Hodgdon. Call Hodgdon.

Just an update on this. I called hodgdon/Winchester powders and they said they are not sealing them right now. Only explanation they gave was that the guy who seals them quit doing so. Kind of odd if you ask me but right now I'm just glad I have powder. Wish I could find some h335 now.

Appreciate the gesture, and thanks for your help throughout the thread. I am hoping to find someone local who may want to trade some h335 for some win231 but no success so far.

Know your pain - W231 is a pistol powder and a darn good one but it goes a looonnngg way when loading pistol rounds. Try local IPSC or IDPA matches and maybe you'll score.
