I'm new to the Fal-style thing and am seeking info on the basics before I make a purchase. What I'm looking for is model type info, for instance I've seen Springfields listed as SAR-48, SAR-4800 and would appreciate info on the differences, not to mention the other manufacturers and variants.

Thanks, Keith

Welcome to the addiction. I have 18 of them in different forms! As far as I know with the Springfields the SAR-48 was a preban and the 4800 was the post ban with the goofy thumbhole stocks and stuff to pacify the legislators for a very short period of time. I could be mistaken though. A great place to hang out on for FAL info is the falfiles.com. There is some good knowledge here as well, but more specific there.

Buy the best you can afford.  DSA usually kick butt, I built mine from a STG58 kit and an Imbel receiver.  It is a very nice rifle.  For most a DSA is the best route.  Good luck.

(edit - I can't spell worth crap..lol)
