I haven't sold a gun in my collection off since about 2004, so I'm rusty to the accepted practices in verifying an FFL and what not. In 2004 you needed an ink-signed copy sent through the mail. Now I have someone asking if they can fax a copy of their FFL to me. Is this legal now as per ATF ruling?

The ATF will allow a faxed copy.  You can verify the validity of the FFL on their (ATF's) website after it's faxed to you.

the ATF approved electronic transmission of an FFL fax or e-mail are kosher.

The newer FFL's are fax enhanced by increasing the size of the print for the FFL numbers so they can be read easier.

Ink signed FFLs are a no no as they are easily altered & faked.  Don't rely on them.

Better option is:

1) faxed FFL AND 2) verify with BATFE's "EZ CHECK" system at the link above.

The gun dealers who still insist on the OLD "ink signed" crap are living in the past, don't get it, and they will probably screw up other aspects of the transfer that might get them & you in trouble come inspection time.
