I am looking at a couple of rifles (not SA) the Polytech is all original in post ban config for $850, the Fed Ord has as far as I could see USGI: stock, HR-T bolt, HR-T barrel, and DRT rear sight (I haven't checked the marks on my Norinco's rear sight).  The Fed Ord has the serial number in the 60k range and is $1k.

I thought all the later Fed Ords were ChiCom parts guns.  The receiver on the Fed Ord looks more worn than my Norinco M14S.

I get free money to spend!

The Federal Ordnance M14 will likely have Chinese parts.  Federal Ordnance receiver, serial number 60223, was cut apart and checked for surface and core hardness.  It was very soft.  I'd go with the Poly Technologies rifle but the Chinese bolts are not as hard as they should be on the surface.  So, after thousands of rounds the bolt may start to open up on the headspace.  It will also get peened at the surfaces where it contacts the receiver.  I suggest checking headspace every 500 rounds just to be extra safe.  At some point, I would have a USGI bolt fitted to the Chinese receiver by an experienced M14 gunsmith.  If you want put a functional flash suppressor on the Chinese M14, you'll need to comply with the named parts count regulation.  I have free articles (.pdf format) on the Chinese M14 bolt testing and domesticating the Chinese M14.  I also have the BATFE letter that spells out what exacty are the named parts on a Chinese M14.  E-mail me if you want a copy of these articles.  I delete your e-mail upon reply and you won't get any spam.  [email protected]

I've read many a good thing about Poly Tech, not so much about Fed Ord.

Fed Ord receiver will likely be an out of spec piece of junk. Shootable, but just barely.

I vote for the polytech.

I had a Fed Ord and it had the same problems that Different discussed.  I wound up stripping the parts and building on a better receiver...

Picked up a Polytech about six months ago.  $850, LNIB.  I'm happy with it.  The bolt issue doesn't worry me.  I don't plan on running a bagillion rounds thru this thing.  Surf around and you will find many many Poly owners that have never done the bolt swap and rifles are functioning just fine.

IMO the Polytech receiver alone is worth as much as the complete Fed-Ord.

I haven't done the bolt swap on my Norinco M14, probably won't unless I find a treasure chest full of M118.  I only shoot NATO surplus through her though.
