I know this is beating a dead horse, but I spent 2 hours today trying find Federal 22 locally. Walmarts are almost out of ammo. Local gun shop tells me that he has 7 suppliers who are all out of most ammo. No .380 or .38 Special to be had - period. What gives? I can't accept that there is enough stockpiling going on to cause this. Is the government pressuring ammo makers to cut back? Are ammo makers conspiring to get prices up? It's ridiculous that I can't find bulk pack federal 22LR in America. I've been to numerous Walmarts and a couple different gunshops and came up with 1 box of CCI Mini Mags and 5 - 50 round boxes of federal target. Something's up guys. I'm beginning to fee like a frog in a pot of cool water with the burner going under it. I guess I'll try to buy online, but don't have very high hopes. My GSG and My Ceiner equipped AR only like Federal or CCI.

I think we are facing a couple of things here. First and foremost I think we are cutting our own throats to a degree. I have befriended a Wally World sporting goods manager over the past few months. She tells me that supplies of ammo have been very hard to get. what she orders and what she gets are two different things. She said her order should be pretty standard, but the demand has thrown that off. She may order, say 200 boxes of .22 and she gets a shipment of 100, but maybe she gets and extra 50 boxes of 9mm. Next order she may get 300 boxes of 22 and 0 boxes of 9mm or .45. Basically, her orders tend to be suggestions and she takes what she gets. She also says that her customers are crazy. She'll get a shipment in and 3-4 guys will buy up everything she gets, sometimes spending a $1000 or more. One guy bought every single bulk pack she got in one order at over a $1000.
A friend of mine in MD tells me that at every gun show he goes to he sees guys showing up and taking out hand trucks full of ammo. A recent show I went to had all the 257 Roberts, 35 Whelan, or whatever it was, that you would want. Try to find .223, 9mm, .45 or .22 and you were out of luck. A friend that worked the gun show said the ammo got wiped out the first couple of hours of the three day event. This Sky is Falling mentality is a self perpetuating nightmare. Or a self fulfilling prophesy..what ever fancy analogy you want to use. Bottom line is is greed vs. Supply and demand plain and simple. If I'm a manufacturer I'm going to closely monitor production. If I know that every round I make will sell, I would be in no hurry to flood the market. The market will drive the price up. Keep production moderate while the prices go up because you know that gradual increases in production will go out the door at the higher prices. I also remember that we have two wars going on for the last 6+ years. I'm thinking there's an awful lot of empty brass and spent lead out in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan. That has had to deplete the raw materials to some degree don't you think? And what about the increase in the cost of copper? I don't know about where you live, but theivery of copper pipe at construction sites has been very common. Even Mrs. elwd1 took a Maxwell House can of old copper pipe fittings to a reclaimation center and came back with $90! The Obama factor has driven some of this too. Tell me that you have gone into any gun store anywhere and NOT either saw the pictures, the bumper stickers, the NRA handouts, or heard the staff make their comments about "it's just a matter of time..." or "Now that the Dems are in..." on and on, and I'll call you a liar. I don't want to get political, but what a complete boon this has been for the gun and ammo industry. Politically, I don't think we would see anything happen until after mid term elections. And as far as the "Dem" thing goes, wasn't it a Repblican Congress back in 1994? Yep, I'm from Pennsylvania, you know where we all cling to our Bibles and our guns. It'd pretty apparent to me the meaning behind that statement now. I can't do anything about bailouts, Treasury buyouts of bad debt, fixing bad credit practices of the banks, Corporate Executive bonuses, but I sure can go out and do something about my shooting hobby... "Mrs elwd1, where did I put the furniture dolly, I got to go to WalMart..."

| well said. We're digging our own grave with all of the hoarding of ammos and guns. Thinking that the new Pres will do away w/ some of the guns now is ridiculous. The world's economy is about to collapse and he's thinking of gun-control? C'mon. We're the one that are spending money in buying the guns and ammo = stimulating the economy... |

Actually, it was last summer when copper was over $8 (I was curious so I Googled it––-hoping Mrs. elwd1 was selling anything else to the junk man)
Bottom line is it's greed all the way around. I've just resigned myself to buying a box or two of CCI MiniMags that I seem to find easily at $6+ per 100, and a Fed Bulk once in a while when available. It seems that the Federal Bulks are pretty much available throughout Western PA Wally Worlds. |

No Federal, but lots of 'Expert HV' bulk packs, Blazer Brass and WWB pistol ammo piled high. A couple boxes of Remington .223, but I've NEVER seen anything else in that cal at that store. |
| I have read a few theories, One which is not really a theory but fact, People are buying as much as they can. 2. Scared of Obama. 3. Which I saw on a few forums don't know if this is true but I could see it being threw. Ammo mfg's are holding aback becauswe of worry of the posibilty of Ammo Serial #'s This would effictively destroy any stock piled ammo they had left that was not sold if that shit passed. Like I said I read about it somewere so don't quote me on that. |

I do my grocery shopping at Wally world once a week....every time I do, I check the ammo suplies...sometimes they have alot .....sometimes a few boxes....sometimes none .......Ive averaged about a box a week over the last ten weeks....(rem. golden or fed bulk 14.95 for 550)
This is with all calibers....Here in NV, (north) I guess we're not quite as paranoid, but suplies are half what it used to be  ..............This whole ammo thing bothers me, but I alrerady have over a 1000 rnds each for every gun I own, plus 12000 rnds of .22 stocked up so Im not as upset as some people....I do feel for ya guys!!

I have over 70 boxes of federal 550 bulk paks and I am always looking for more I have 4 mouths to feed 1 dedicated upper 1 cmmg conversion 1 gsg5 and 1 10/22 also the wifes henry lever gun. I got into the .22 because of the raping that was going on from greedy dealers that were selling .223 and 7.62x39 etc. So now I hoard .22 fed bulk paks and buy out every wally world that I come across which is now 9 of them in my area. So if you snooze then you loose, I will not be held up again by greedy dealers, I also have a stock pile of .223 and 7.62x 39 that I bought a few years back because I saw what was comming down the line so now the dealers can screw themselves, that also goes for their overpriced ars and aks I got mine when the prices were decent.

Last week the 525 pack was $17.99... FYI My local Cabela's has Federal stacked to the roof, but it's $17 something a box and missing 25 rounds
