hey guys....
so i am somewhat knew to the .308 game.  I bought Federal Gold Match 168 grain and a box of the cheap wal mart stuff.  I think it was 12.99 for the cheao Federal as well. I am planning on reloading nice quality ammunition in the .308 caliber, and so I compared the Brass of both boxes.  It seems that the Federal Match uses the same brass as the cheap Federal.  Or am i wrong? The headstamp is the same and they look identical.  This tells me that the brass is not that important in loading match ammo?  I thought that the match would include better brass (if there even exist a difference in brass) than the cheap ammo.  For 34.99/box i would assume that they are completely different than the cheaper 12.99/box ammo.  I am asking all of this because i am starting to load .308 and am trying to decide on what brass i should use.  If i can get great results out of the normal federal brass than i would save money and go that route. Thanks guys, i appreciate help.

I load 308 for my bolt rifle.

FC rifle brass is soft.

A couple of loadings is all you get before the primer pockets of FC brass become loose.

Winchester and/or Remington rifle brass is what you want.

Use up the FC, and get better brass next time.

There are many threads about 223 FC brass, also I have had the same loose primer pocket problem in FC, 338 Win mag.

ASSUMING that I wanted a usable quantity of brass, say 100 rounds for my lot.  I'd be buying un-primed brass from my favorite mfn. Or 100 rounds of loaded ammo from the same lot#.  WHY?  Lot variations.

When you buy different types of loaded ammo.......I highly doubt, that the brass lot numbers will be the same.  They may look alike.........but, why chance it.  Even after it's fired..........one may have seen vastly higher pressures.

You're looking for brass consistancy.

The brass is probably the same to start with, but I would think the match brass would be more uniform and may have some extra prep.  The real difference is the higher quality bullets and probably more uniform powder charge.  I have been using Federal .308 Win brass for years and it has been very serviceable.  You should have no trouble reloading it.

After firing and depriming, weight the cases... then decide if they are the same.

That is a good idea.
