What's the story on Federal Ordnance, Inc. M14s?  I found one at the local pawn for $699.  Thoughts?

In todays market its a decent deal.  If it's all Chinese parts is average before the election.  If it's GI parts it's a good deal.

If you don't want it please send me the contact info.

Take Care,

Tony

LOL, it was actually sold to one of the regulars, but he said he would sell it to me to order something else.

My first m14 was a fed-ord built with chinese parts I payed under $400 for back in 91 or 2.  The elevation notches in the reseiver  for the rear sight were worn a good bit. In hind sight, I wonder if this area wasnt as hard as it needed to be. It was in decent shape other than that, and shot good. I thought I payed to much for it back then, but Springfields were out of my price range and I really wanted a m14.  I ended up trading it for a very nice condition RPB open bolt M10 several years later, so I did good in the long run.

A friend of mine had a fed-ord reseiver that he sent to Smith Ent along with a USGI parts kit. Smith heat treated the reseiver, and built the rifle. It was a nice m14 when he got it back. It was marked "smith" on the flat behind the rear sight. He ended up selling it during the peak of the 94 AWB craze, and I dont know what he sold it for.
I have seen a couple sell on gunbroker in the last 5-6 months for around 1K. I have no idea of the part contents or condition of those.
A complete rifle in good shape for $699 is not to bad. There is a chance it has USGI parts.

In genral I would not buy a fed-ord reseiver unless it was a super steal. I have heard they have had problems with heat treat, among other problems. I have been supprised at the prices that bare reseivers have brougfht recently. A never barreled early m1a reseiver in the 30K s/n range sold for 1K, and a rear lugged Armscorp sold for more than that on gunbroker.

From the talk on the inter-web, there might be some new production reseivers available in the near future.
