What is the difference between 22lr and 22 mag? Is it just the length of the cartridge? I have an older bolt action, single shot gun. I was wondering if would be possible just to drill the chamber deeper, and use it with 22 mag. I am considering building a pistol to use for 22 shot. I will be making the receiver and the barrel, and using just a bolt bought online. The barrel will be made on a lathe, and I hope to taper the inside to act as a choke. Is there a way to make the barrel quiet just by design, besides the obvious silencer? Also, do these shells have wadding like shotgun shells? |

22 mag is a longer case and is fatter at the bottom so it wont fit into a regular .22lr chamber. the 22mag has a couple hundred fps advantage to .22lr. Reaming the chamber on a .22lr barrel for .22 mag could be done but i am not sure how practical or safe it would be. With making a .22 pistol for the shot shells you must use a rifled barrel. You can only have a smooth bore barrel if its over 18 inches unless the firearm its on is registered as an NFA weapon. Smooth bore pistols are illegal. Pistols like the judge that can shoot .410 shells are still rifled. I have shot a few of the shot shell rounds out of my P22 with a 3.5" barrel and they are not as loud as a regular .22 out of it. Best thing to do to make it quieter is a longer barrel but that kind of defeats the purpose of what your doing. The CCI shells have the shot in a plastic "bullet" that breaks apart when it exits the barrel. On the brass crimped shells the shot is just loose i believe. I noticed that the brass crimped ones don't always like to extract since the crimp expands outside of the chamber on to the rifling and can get stuck. |

Thanks for the info. My main concern was how safe would it be to modify a rifle to shoot 22 mag. If the chamber needs to be reamed, it doesn't sound like a good idea. I also was not aware of the rules with a smooth bore pistol. I just figured I could probably get a better pattern. I would be curious to find out why a smooth bore pistol is illegal (other than because the gov. says so). |
