Which is louder at a distance and can be heard farther away, the M4 carbine or AK-47?
Which has more of an echo when fired off, an M4/M16 in 5.56x45 or an AK-47 in 7.62x39?
And finaly which has a more distictive sound?

To answer this question, you need to watch Heartbreak Ridge...

I have watched it before. The AK-47 has a distinctive sound but does that mean the 5.56 just sounds like any other rifle round, like the 5.56 is more generic?

What does it mean when people say the M4s sharp popping or cracking sound is not as distinctive as the AK-47s clacking sound?

Get a suppressor.

They sound different!

Rate of fire (auto) is different too but when someone is shooting them AT YOU, you will figure it out real fast unless they are too close.

From the tip of the bayonet to about 50 meters both are too loud to seperate. Beyond 50 meters you can hear the difference and the crack of bullet is different too.

At about 1,000 meters both become too muffled to distinguish.

These are rough values because "sound" varies under different conditions.

Don't know where you are trying to go with this, but most folks in combat know there is no such thing as Friendly Fire… So it doesn't matter what it sounds like, if I can lay in a barrage before you do, I WIN

How far away can an M4 and an AK-47 be heard and can one be heard over the other?

I have heard both in firefights at 4K+

But it depends on conditions!!!

I have also watched an outpost being mortered only 2K and never heard a sound...

Again, what is your real question?

You heard both at 4 kilometers away? Holy shit thats a long ways. Those M4s and AKs must but loud as hell.....

I guess my question is, are they both equally loud no matter how far away you get?

Parrot32: What branch of the military did you serve and when did you serve?

And if you heard both the M4 and AK-47 from 4K+ can you still tell the two apart?

Don't you ask this question every couple of months

"Yes they sound different"  and "No they are not appreciably louder/softer" and "weather conditions such as temp, humidity, altitiude, etc will affect the distance at which you can differentiate the sounds" will cover it.

'echo' is nothing more than sound reflecting off a surface- the amount of 'echo' is going to depend on what frequencies the material reflects the best.

[ETA] I gotta ask, why do you always wonder about this? (assuming you are the guy who asked this a couple of months ago and then a couple of months before that?)

So the M4 and AK have the same amount of echo?

I agree, this is an odd question.

What, are you trying to murder someone and are worried about the noise alerting someone?

Help us out bro.

No I'm not going to murder anyone....or am I?

The reason I am curious is because many people seem to think the AK has a distinctive sound which had me wondering what makes it distinctive and how loud is it compared to the M4 used by the Army. Thats why I ask.

It also depends on the terrain and your position in relation to the sound source.

Is the 5.56 or 7.62x39 as loud as a .308 or 30-06?

they all have about the same decibels

the differences are in the tone you here- hence the differences in carry over distances.

and why does this question come up every few months???

How different do they carry like 5.56 vs 30-06?

I was told that people think the noise of the AK-47 would be heard at a much longer distance than the M4 - but it is just the opposit. The AK's lower frequency is much easier absorbed by trees and bushes than the M4 - and for this reason they both are heard at the same distance. It's the cycle rate and duration of the fired shots that give the make of gun away. Is that possible?
