After 2 months and 3 weeks my paperwork finally came in for my new Gemtech G5 suppressor.

I took it the next day and put 250 rounds of 55g hornady fmj with 24.3 grains of H335 behind it. This is my first suppressor and the first time ever being able to use one. So the whole experience was new to me. I mounted it to a 16" BCM BFH middy with a BCM BCG. I have read that the upper receiver will get much dirtier using the suppressor than not, but I couldn't believe it was that much dirtier. After about 150 rounds my bolt was having an extremely hard time. She was short stroking a lot, and not picking up the next round out of all the magazines I tried.It happened at least once out of every 5 to 10 rounds after I passed the 150 round count mark. Is this normal? I have been using Milcom with great success before but is it just not suited for suppressor use? I also had to install the a2 quick attach flash hider which isn't the one I originally wanted. I asked my dealer to get the vortex but for some reason in almost 3 months it hadn't been delivered so he gave me the A2 and said I could bring it back to him when the Vortex came in. I was very surprised at the corrosion of the FH after just one outing. Will the Vortex do any better since it isn't enclosed at the end? Is there an average of how long one of these FH's will last. I am sure barrel length matters, but not considering that what has been everyones experience?  " />
I went ahead and left the shims in and I didn't rockset it since I was going to be swapping it out soom. I think I will go ahead and just pay him for the A2 fh and put it on my A2 clone so I can suppress them both anyways. I also noticed that where my G5 connects to the FH there was some brown tint (what looks to me as rust) at the points of contact between the 2 different pieces. Is there some way to clean it and what kind of protective lubricant needs to be used if any? The manual says to use a copper pipe cleaner of 3/4" size if I remember correctly. Is this really what needs to be done? I am sure everyone know that these things aren't cheap and they are life long purchases so I want to be sure I take proper care of it. |

The blue-green deposits on the mount are deposits of vaporized copper from the bullet, not corrosion of the flash hider itself. I have about 3,500 rounds through my upper since I added the G5 mount (500 suppressed) and there is no discernible erosion. I do give it a good scrubbing with a brass brush to keep the can from sticking, as the tolerances are very tight.
In my experience, the additional back pressure provided by the suppressor seems to balance slowing of the bolt from increased fouling for the most part. More lube is a good thing, up to the point that it's really spitting a lot of crap at you out of the ejection port. The last batch of Vortex G5 mounts didn't have the proper heat treatment, hence the delay in availability. There's a thread about it over in the Gemtech Industry forum. A 3/4" pipe fitting brush works well for cleaning the mounting surfaces inside the can (less than $5 at Home Depot). I have never had to take apart the mounting portion of the can or add any lube to it, but the manual recommends, "...a small quantity of high temperature grease, such as Permatex Super-Lube synthetic lubricant". |
