I have been wanting to pick up a nice .22 for sometime now. Now that I am ready, I can't seem to decide which one I want. I orginally was interested in a remington 597 in 22mag, but after reading about the magazine problems, I have decided to go with a ruger.

I have it narrowed down to two models. The first is the 10/22 T, LR with the 20" bull barrel and laminate stock. The second is the 10/22RBM, 18 1/2" standard barrel, hardwood stock, chambered in .22WMRF.

I can't decide and I could use some thoughts and opinions. What are the pros and cons of each rifle? Is the 22 mag worth the price of the rounds? And what is a decent scope to get?

I only have ten days before I head back to Afghanistan and I would like to buy the rifle before I go, but I want to make sure that I get the right one. Thanks for your help.

i have a remington 597 in .22lr and they have completely fixed the mag problem.  The problems occured with the plastic magazines and they don't sell them w/ plastic anymore.  I can shoot all day without a single malfunction.  cheap rifle too, more accurate than my friend's 10/22, and i only payed 129.99 brand new for it.  Even though they have fixed it, you can call remington and they'll send u a new magazine for free no questions asked! free magazine!

oh, and about your magnum question... i have a .22 mag and .22lr and i completely favor the .22lr.  the magnum is fun, but not very practical unless you're going after something like a coyote.  if you're shooting rabbits, squirrels or just target i'd say go w/ .22lr 100%.  .22 mags cost about 7 dollars for 50 and .22lr is about 525 bullets for 10 dollars, so you get 10x the bullets for a little more money.  like i said, the power and extra speed of a .22mag isn't necessary unless you're going after something big, for target purposes, they're not practical at all.

For general plinking a .22LR is great, 550 rd federal bulk packs for $9.  If you want to build up a 10/22 you can get a standard carbine and the sky is the limit, there are lots of accesories/parts available.  The 10/22 T is really nice right out of the box and lots of fun to shoot.  Mine was a little picky about ammo right away, but the federal bulk packs are pretty good and I have had no troubles with mini mags.

I went for the stainless and am very happy with mine.

I've never been interested in the way the 'T' model looks but, I like yours.

I think you can get a 10/22 in .22mag.  I know there's some kind of conversion for .17hmr available.  I would buy a stock 10/22 and build it up exactly how you want it.  I just finished mine and I love it.
