I am going to baby step into all of this.  As my handle says, I am about as new to guns as you can get (well, as far as ownership goes).  I am thinking of getting a 22 to start.  nice and cheap to get used to everything I need to do (I've never even cleaned a gun before!).  Now comes the question, which one to get?  I know the general consensus is the Ruger 10/22 can't be beat, but I am looking for a bolt action.
The two that I am looking at are the Savage Mark II FV or Mark II FVSS and the Marlin 882SS.  Can either one hold up against the 10/22?  Which one would be the best for target (accuracy, durability, ect.)?  Thanks.

Well I'd argue that the Marlin Model 60 can be most 10/22's out of the box for cheaper. The only down side is you can't find too many aftermarket parts for the 60. Personally I can't see buying a gun and then spending huge $$$ replacing all the parts. I've had 5 model 60's and they've all been great.

Comparing the 10/22 to a bolt gun is apples and oranges. If you want a bolt action I'd go with the 882SS, or 882SSV if you're looking for a .22WMR. If you don't like the trigger Rifle Basix makes an adjustable (10oz-2lbs) trigger that has had great reviews. Savage makes a good shooting gun, they're just not as pretty as some of the other guns out there.

Check out www.marlinfirearms.com "Marlin Talk" "Rimfire" board. Lots of info and a lot of the guys have some or all of the rifles in question.

All the Marlin bolt actions will surprise you at the kind of accuracy they will give for so little money, I've owned several.

If you want something a little more "nice" I have heard many great things about the CZ 452. www.cz-usa.com/_p/p04.php They're a little more expensive than the Marlin or Savage but you get what you pay for..

Good luck! You will be addicted I promise, .22's are great!

I have a CZ-452. Easily the best bolt gun available for the money. In fact, it would be the best for the money if it was twice as expensive as it is.

I suggest checking out the forums at Rimfire Central

I went with a Savage Arms Mark II Stainless Steel.  I really like it so far.  Now I just need to get to be a decent shot.  Practice, practice practice I guess.  Thanks for all the feedback.

Hey good luck with your new gun! Rimefires are awesome, you can shoot all day for $10! I'd like to get a Savage (.243 0r .308) with their new accutrigger, it sounds awesome!
