Finally got all the stuff in that I needed to start reloading my some .223 rounds. This was my first time reloading rifle rounds so I took my time and only did 50rds, this go around. I'll do another 50 of a different load tomorrow. Take a trip to the range and see which load I like better.

First load was:

Montana Gold .224 55gr FMJ BT
Remington 223 Case
Hogdon BLC-2 26.6grs
CCI Small Rifle 400 Primers

Tomorrow I'll do the same exact load but with 27grs instead of the 26.6grs.

Keep a close watch for pressure signs...

Speer #13 has 27.0 of BL-C2 as max for that bullet weight....

Hogdon #24 has a max of 27.5...

Hornady #7 has 26.6 listed as a 3100 fps load with a max of 28.1 grns.

With so many variables in cases, bullets, primers and variations between lots you need to be careful and not start with the listed max loads.

I don't know but...........

My manual lists BLC2 at max 26.5 gr. with CCI #450 Mag primer.

For a first time load.........I would have started lower.  Then worked my way up.

In my 223 AR, in LC brass, 55 gr FMJBT,

Got pressure signs at 27 grs BLC2, so I dropped back to 26.5 grs BLC2.

This is my standard 55 gr load. Almost full power, easy on brass, and accurate.

ETA, welcome to the reloading club dHUTCH.

Yes, I know........

BTW........the BOOK recommends a mag primer for the reason that normally ball powders are harder to ignite.  That being said.......yes, I've been known to use a standard primer with success.

But, I still would have started lower and worked my way up.

That's ME.

What you do, is up to you.

Aloha, Mark

PS..........keep an eye out for overpressure signs.........

Overpressure signs (photos), look about half way down the page….…….

I see a very serious problem here. Your rounds are not loaded into P-mags.

Oh ok, I understand where you're coming from. Then maybe today I'll just do another 50rds at 25.5grs instead of 27. I've been warned by a couple people to watch out for primer piercing. Appreciate you fellas help, as I said I'm new and whatever advice yal can offer, I'll be proud to listen.

Yeah my manual lists a start charge of 25 and a max charge of 27gr of BL(C)-2 with a 55gr projectile.  I'd start at 25 if I were you and work up.  That is the only way to safely work up a load.  Also, load smaller test batches (5 or 10) until you find a load that works for you with no pressure signs.
