I am planning on refinishing both a 12 gauge pump and a 410 single shot. I have a few spots of rust on the 12, but nothing major. The 410 is very rusty because of being stored out in a machine shed for a good 20 years. My main concern is what is the best way so sand this stuff smooth? I do not have the option of blasting it. Also, what is a good technique for refinishing the wood?

break out the 220 grit paper and have at it.  You might have to use 80 grit if it is really bad.  I usually use 220 to prep metal that I cant fit in my blasting cabinet and it works fine.  As far as the wood....if you are going to duracoat it, just use the 220 grit to remove any finish and spray.  If restaining, that will be a little tougher.
