I have a bunch of folders but would like to see if a fixed blade might suit me. General purpose EDC, nothing specialized. Looking to spend around $50 for the first one and if I can get into it I would look at higher end knives. Any recommendations? |

I like my Ridgeback, get a new sheath to go with it though.

Depending on the size/shape that appeals to you...
Maybe a Becker BK14 - $44 street... and if you like the knife and want a better grip, TKC sells G10 scales for it here Or perhaps a Gerber Big Rock - about $30 street

For 51 you can get one with neck sheath as well as one with wallet sheath. Cuts like a scalpel. |

I like These.
Good size, heft & strength with a great sheath. I have 2, and will buy more. And they are made in Portland, OR. John |

Great little fixed blade knife. Also, an Izula or Izula II. All of these knives share similar handles and are of about the same size. About as big as you want to go for an EDC fixed blade, but big enough to handle 90% of the tasks you'd need a fixed blade to do. I use my BK14 to field dress deer. It works really well. Plus I can just wash all the blood, fat and hair off when I'm done, give it a quick dry and back in the sheathe. I recommend purchasing from this vendor, Baryonyx Blades, and paying the $2 upcharge for his special grade treatment. He thins out the edge to a very shallow, very slicey angle. Then strop it to a very, very sharp edge. Of course then you can't go and baton it through oak logs, but I don't do that with small fixed blades anyways. |

Decided to go big, gets good reviews on YouTube. A bit large for EDC admittedly |

Every knife that I've purchased had horrible grinds compared to what I put on them. They all get reprofiled. Those Scharades get pretty good reviews. Decent steel. Decent designer behind them. In order to stay on topic, I'd be going for a BK&T at that price, probably add a few $ to it and get a BK16. |

No problem.
To me they are good value knife that I don't mind abusing because they are affordable. But they are not cord wrapped. Later! John Quoted:

Mora Companion for less than $20 is my top recommendation. It's an outstanding value. Maybe the Cold Steel Mini Hunter. Frame handles like the ESEE Izula or Candura, or TOPS Tibo are options but they'rs right at $50 or just above it. True story on the Mora Companion. I have 2 now...one for the kitchen and one on the boat. |
