I'm looking for a fixed blade.  Will be used for hunting, camping etc.  Needs to be able to withstand abuse.  Choping, split wood if need to.

Any suggestions?

Thanks alot.

Just my (un)educated opinion, but two knives come to mind: The USAF Pilot Survival Knife and the Ka-Bar.

I have good experience with both, and each is available for around $50.

I've done everything from make fires to shelters to stretechers with both of these. I currently carry a Spec-Plus Ka-Bar on my BO gear and I'm buying myself and my wife a PSK to go on our hiking backpacks.

I recommended these because they are good (and inexpensive) enough to do what you need to with them while you decide what exactly you like/dislike about them. Then go and spend $100+ on a semi-custom knife that you think will fulfill your needs exactly.

One more thing: get a good quality multi-tool, too, that will attach or go into the sheath of the fixed-blade...you'll probably use it more than the big knife!

Spec Plus Survival Machete.  Simple, inexpensive, tough.  Team it up with a good stout regular blade

OR

One of the Becker or Ontario Bolo knives.....kinda fill both bills.

Try some of these hot mamas!

Or some of these!

This sounds like a job for Ranger Knives RD series. Made from triple tempered 5160 spring steel, they are basically indestructable. You can get the RD series in 6", 7.5" or 9.5" blade configurations. They are full flat ground with 1/4" thick spines and micarta handles. They also offer an unconditional lifetime warranty on the blades and Justin Gingrich, the owner, has some of the best customer service in the business. He can also customize your order for a very reasonable price.

Here are some pics of my RD7, which I think is an ideal size for a camping blade. I ordered it satin finished, but later had it coated. I have beat the crap out of this blade, and it never quits. It is actually difficult to wear the edge down enough to the point that it won't shave. Awesome blades.

Give Justin a call, he will set you up. Great guy to deal with.

I'm gonna have to vote on the Tom Brown Tracker.  It does everything that a regular knife, hatchet and saw will do.  Maybe not as effective as all 3 of those separately but pretty close.  I own one and chop 4" limbs of trees with it with relative ease.

Mine is one that I made.

I have to agree on the Rangers.
I have an RD-7, and for the price, you won't find a stronger all-around performer. The larger Beckers are also a good deal, but they aren't as robust as the Rangers.
