If someone can think of more appropriate forum for this let me know, otherwise, here goes...

I found the projectile jacket below in the front shoulder of a deer I recently killed. There was no other evidence of a wound in this location. There was no evidence of the core. The bullet was encased in grisle and isolated by the healing process. It is .308 in diameter, has a boattail and was fired from a bore with 12 groove rifling. Can anyone help identify the projectile and more specifically the firearm that fired it?

The only thing I can come up with is a Marlin lever action with "microgroove rifling" but i don't know of any 30-30 load using boattail bullets. Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Might have been a Leverolution bullet shot from a Marlin.  Some reloaders will load spire points for .30-30, with one in the chamber and one in the magazine, but that's not generally the way I would bet.

Voi la.  This is the projectile used in the Leverevolution ammo.  I would bet that you're right on with guessing it's a marlin microgroove.

The 160 gr. they show for the 30-30 has the crimping groove far enough forward that it looks about right. Anyone know how long this ammo has been available?

Leverolution ammo's only been out 2 or 3 years, I think.

And the Microgroove rifling in .30 caliber is, in fact, 12 grooves.  Since 1968, anyway. http://www.leverguns.com/articles/fryxell/microgrove-barrels.htm

Marlin makes/made Bolt action centerfires as well.
So while I agree it's a Marlin... it's not necessarily a 30-30.

One can also single load a spire-point bullet into a Marlin too...

That's the website that pretty much has me convinced. I also could not find info on any other commercial firearm maker that used this type of rifling.

I think the age of the wound would correspond roughly when the ammo was introduced. The animal was about 5 1/2 years old which would put him as a yearling or 2 1/2 yr. old when he was shot.

Incidentally, this is the critter the bullet came out of, a nutless stag buck.

I didn't see another 30 cal. firearm on Marlin's site that had the microgroove rifling. The others had 6 groove or Ballard style.

Interesting...
I thought they were all "microgrove"... kinda "their thing".

I don't hunt but my neighbor does. I wouldn't say he was the best hunter in the world by any means, but he has killed his fair share, and frequently has some critter he is skinning in the back yard. He told me that every deer he ever shot with a 30-30 ran away.

Early jacket separation fits the bill with the Leverevolution ammo too.  That's what the honey likes to shoot out of the Guide Gun and I've never seen a round that didn't separate no matter what it goes into. Sometimes the jacket hardly seems deformed at all, almost like the lead just fell out.

He must not have hit them in the heart or lungs. There have probably been more deer killed with .30-30's than any other one caliber. The old .30-30 is plenty of cartridge for deer.
