I didn't see this addressed specifically in the FAQ, so here goes...

Can the caliber engraving just be caliber-specific, or does it have to be cartridge-specific? IOW, can it just be listed as 5.45, .30, etc. Or would it have to be 5.45x39, .308, etc?

If I missed a previous discussion on this, then I apologize.

If your host gun is an existing Title 1 firearm, by law it already has the caliber engraved on it somewhere, and there is no additional caliber engraving requirement when you turn it into a Title 2 (NFA) firearm.

Doesn't matter if it is already engraved "multi" or in a caliber which is not the same as the caliber of the NFA item you are planning to build: The original maker already met the caliber-engraving requirement.

But: When you fill out the Form 1, you need to list the actual caliber of the NFA item you will initially build. That caliber does not need to be engraved anywhere on the firearm, it only needs to be printed correctly on the Form 1.

And as far as listing it on the Form 1, I have seen them approved with either cartridge or bore diameter -- fer instance, .30 cal works for both .30/06 or .308 (or 7.62, for that matter).
