I thought I read someone did this but cant find it anymore.  Has anyone drilled their tube and  threads to tap a set screw to ensure the tube and thread protector stays together for a can that will be under a hand guard?  I plan on a 10.5 " barrel with a 12.5" hand guard, so that I can set 2" of an 7.6" suppressor under hand guard.  What was the outcome?  How much more difficult is it to tap that area?

Yes, been discussed among the myriad of post in 1 or 2 threads. Red loctite will hold up well enough for a few removals, i use teflon tape.
