I called the ATF and they told me that my Form 1 was pending as of 6.5.09. What exactly does that mean?

It means they (NFA Branch) have assigned you an examiner and are just now in the process of actually beginning to look at your "packet". At least that's my understanding... Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

They sure took their sweet time getting around to it. I sent the form in at the end of March.

Yes, it's been assigned to an examiner.  My first of four has been pending since April 10.

ETA-Sent in early February.

ATF statuses:
"Not in the system", after your check is cashed your paperwork sits in a data entry queue until someone gets around to typing it into the database
"Pending", it has left data entry and is now at the bottom of the pile on an examiner's desk
"Approved", your stamp has been affixed
"Mailed", your stamp has been mailed back to you.

You're just farther back in a VERY long line of "firearms enthusiasts" who want NFA items at this point in time.  It took 92 days total for my Form 1, from late November to the same day of the month in February.  Good thing I was too busy to check with the NFA branch on the status-I'd have twitched the whole three months I was waiting.
