Which lock from the above or anyother for that matter, offers the safest and strongest lock-up on a folder carried for self-defense?

What are the pros and cons of each?

My apologies if this has been beaten to death, I checked the stickies and went back 5 pages on the forum and couldn't find anything.

It's a matter of opinion really.

All three work, but i prefer a frame lock.  A frame lock, locks the blade the same way a liner lock works.  The 2 notable exceptions between the two are:  the frame lock is thicker with a greater contact patch between the frame and blade...which makes it stronger; and 2) the tighter your grip on a frame lock, the better the lock.  Frame lock folders generally cost quite a bit more than their liner lock cousins

I don't mind liner locks.  Properly done, they're really good.  The key word is "properly".  Some knife makers use a thin steel for their liner locks, in doing so it makes it much more likely that the lock will slip off the blade shank and the lock fails.  Other makes use a thick, properly fitted liner lock that works well...but you're typically going to pay more for that.  Cheap liner locks? taking your fingers for granted.  Expensive liner locks? expensive and nearly in the relm of frame locks.

The Axis lock gets good reviews.  I personally have not had one fail.  Some say it's a groudnbreaking safety device, others give it an "ok".  Cons? only available in Benchmade knives.  Benchmade makes good stuff, but you'll be limited to their designs.
