What if I wanted to go ahead and send a form 1 in to register my lower as MG without having any parts for full auto? Is that possible?
I read that you have to use the RDIAS serial number on the form. |

Due to FOPA (Firearm Owners Protection Act) of 1986 the ATF no longer accepts ATF Form 1's from individual to make and register a machinegun.
The only legal way to get a machinegun as a civilian is to purchase what is know in the hobby as a "transferrable" sample that was made and registered in the US before May 19th 1986 or imported into the US before 1968. This is why a 20 year old civiliam transferable M16 costs $15,000 and a new one from Colt cost $1500 give or take. The RDIAS, the "R" part stands for Registered as in made and registered with the ATF prior to the FOPA law mentioned above. These already "Registered" Drop in Auto Sears won't save you any coin as they run about $13,000 vs. the "unregistered" ones in shotgun news which for all intents and purposes illegal and only cost $100 bucks. i.e cause you can't use them to legally make a machinegun nowadays. The process is easy. The simplified version is below. Go to subguns or sturmgewehr and place a WTB ad for a M16 or DIAS, cash in hand $15,000. Within about 15 minutes you will have an email (or multiple) from a Class 3 dealers around the country willing to sell you a legal M16 or RDIAS. After ATF approval and tax paid on a ATF Form 4 you will get your complete M16 or registerd drop in auto sear. In the case of a registered sear you drop it into any existing AR15 to make an M16. Hope this helps. James Austin, Texas |
