Apparently they are called the AVT-40. I know there are a couple of them on the registry, does anyone know anything about them or what they are worth?

I know that I've seen registered receivers and registered "triggers" or some variant of a pack.

A Russian friend who is familiar with the SVT/AVT wasn't impressed with the AVT.  He states that they were prone to breakage and got (for lack of a better term) shot out too quickly.  SVT, fine.  But not AVT.

FWIW,

Mike

There is one on gunbroker for $7k. Its been listed for months. I thought it looked like fun, but of course you can't find mags and parts for them. So I held off from getting it.

The gunbroker one is the one that peaked my interest. I asked the guy about it and he said it is an amnesty registered gun. Can't be too many of them out there. I wonder how easily they break though?

I had the same thoughts you did. I mean, when you are talking about NFA items, rare usually gets more. But of course, who wants a full size rifle shooting a full sized round? Not too much fun at the range. I don't think there would be too many of them out there, but who really wants it?

I fired one many years ago.

Plus:
Full-auto from the shoulder is a hoot!!!
The muzzle brake actually does some good.  Not 'great', but better than without one.
Ten round bursts are about all you can handle.

Minus:
Ten round burst is all you can get.  There were no larger mags ever made for it.
Stock cracked a week after I shot it.  Apparently that is very common.  And just TRY to find an original replacement!
Spare parts are expensive, and you WILL need them if you shoot it!
Handguard gets very hot, quickly.
Full-auto with a full-power rifle round from such a light rifle beats up both you and the rifle.

Hmm, I wonder if it would be ok doing 2 or 3 round bursts? Still seems way cheap considering M14s are over twice as much. New stocks can be ad for $150.

I think it would be one of those things that it depended on the gun. How many 2-3 rd bursts are you going to get before it has an issue? No one could tell you that. It might never have issues, and it might break something the first time you pull the trigger. I'd get it if I did't have lots of other f/a's that I want as shooters first.

If I had the cash, I'd be up for it.  I want to get a '16 first though and I'm going to be saving after the first of the year.

Yeah, don't blame you. The M16 would be a much better choice for your first f/a. So many more options with a 16. .22 threw .50 out of one platform. What more could you want?

Try a SVT first and if the blowback doesn't kill you, then think about the AVT.  And remember that the barrel on these guns are not easily replaced nor are they easily available.

Actually, it'd be my third.  I have a 760 and an Uzi currently.  I need a '16 now and from there, who knows.

I already own one and the only thing I hate about it is taking it down for cleaning.  It exclusively gets Wolf NC ammo because of this.  I guess I haven't experienced this blow back you're speaking of though.

Well, if you have a couple already, then go for it. Its something different, and you know what you are getting into.
