I finally got around to cleaning the metal a couple of days ago. I don't know why I never thought of low heat to soften the cosmoline.  But it works great! Stuck the parts on an old baking/cookie sheet and turned the oven onto "Warm." Let it sit a few minutes and wiped the stuff off. Took the still warm parts outside and washed them with a paintbrush, a toothbrush and Mineral Spirits. Only needed carb cleaner for the deeper nooks and crannies. It was almost too easy. And I was real surprised to find my oven big enough to handle the barrel and receiver. That was nice.Washed the stock off yesterday in the bath tub with hot water and a scrub brush. Tomorrow, or maybe Friday, I'll wash it off with the mineral spirits too. These fancy methods sure were a lot easier than previous attempts with harsh chemicals. And used rather mild ones instead. Doens't get much better than that. |
