My M1 is a very nice rifle...but I absolutely cannot get the windage knob to work! Does anyone else have this problem? Do you know how to fix it?

Can you be more specific?  Is it frozen in place?

Garands sights are finicky. They have to be adjusted just right to work, too loose and they slip, too tight and you need a pipe wrench for adjustment. The secret is to make sure they are lubed properly (I use Kroil in mine). Run the sights all the way up and come down 2 clicks. Put your thumb on the sight and press down as hard as you can. If it moves, it is not tight enough. Adjust the windage screws on the side until it is just tight enough not to move.

yes, the windage knob is frozen in place and will not move. The elevation works fine.

you probably have dried cosmoline in the sight and it wil need to be taken apart and the knob soaked in laquer thinner or mineral spirits for a while then blasted with brake cleaner  then lightly oil it as the brake cleaner dries out the parerization on the metal.. if you don't know how to disassemble the rear sight here's the CMP link to tell you all about how to disassemble your sight as well as your whole Garand
