I have not shot my M1 very much, but Saturday I put about 80 rounds through it. It got very hot and stayed that way for a long time...much hotter than my AR gets after about 150-200 rounds. Is this normal? thanks. |

This exact thing is why I take several rifles to the range when I go. I'll shoot the Garand until it starts getting to warm, then set it aside and shoot another rifle. I usually rotate four rifles doing this since I have four targets posted when noone else is around me at the range to compete for space with. |
He he he he he, Welcome to serious shooting.

| You want HOT fast??!! One of my local ranges use to hold a 'Mad Minute' at the end of a Garand match... 60 seconds.. shooting as many rounds as you can get off prone.... only the rounds in the black on a 5V target (which the aiming black is 1" diameter smaller than the aiming black on a SR target) count... I still hold the record 32 rounds fired in one minute (and I'm a Lefty to boot) with 29 in the black at 200yds (yes that is 4 en-blocs)... and that made for one VERRRY HOT rifle!!! |
| Back in my less mature days (about three years ago) when I first got my CMP M1, I had the most terrible habit of shooting just for the sake of pulling the trigger. On multiple occasions I took my 1.56mil Springfield (w/ original barrel) and got it so hot that you could hear the oil in the handguards sizzle and the front handguard got too hot to hold. The first time I shot it I got so much oil and grease to bubble out of the stock that it perminently dyed part of the awesome tan leather Turner NM sling I had bought an ugly brown color, and it also cost me a shirt. There was so much grease I didn't know what to do. Now that I've calmed down, I do my best to not heat it up that much (plus I hate burning expensive ammo up like that). Still, it was fun at the time. |
