Looking for a Garand...either in restored-to-new condition or in "project" condition.

A local FFL had one on hand at last check, but it was awfully beat up and overpriced.  Had a grenade launcher attached.

CMP is tough due to the lack of local clubs.  Prices are attractive, however.

I would be willing to spend the cash on a quality refurb, if available.  Recommendations?

Stand outside your local gunshow and wait for some old man to walk by with his he wants to get rid of. That's how I get mine.

I'm a total novice when it comes to Garands, so I would prefer to deal with someone reputable.

I highly recommend getting one through the CMP.

The lack of local clubs should not be a problem as there are several organizations you can join via the Internet to meet the membership requirement (VFW, Garand Collectors Association, etc.).  Marksmanship can be met by providing a C&R FFL, concealed weapon license, military service DD214, etc.

www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/eligibility_requirements.htm

So if you are a U.S. citizen, it is not that though.

I have a CCW permit, so I would need to get the club portion covered.

You could join the Garand Collectors Assn for $25 and meet the CMP's "club" requirement. I think the CMP has a link to them on their site. A C&R, CCL, also meets the shooting requirements as well, more than one way to skin a cat...  Check out www.odcmp.com

Any reports on the condition of the field and rack grade rifles?

Did you handpick that Garand?  I'll be at the mercy of their choice.

+1 on the GCA. Great way to take care of the club req.

I got 4 Service grades from the CMP last year and while none of mine were gems, I feel that they were all better deals than I could have gotten on the open market.  I wouldn't overly worry about the luck of the draw, just remember that their grades are taked quite literally when you set your expectations.

I am putting in an order for a Greek Return Service Grade.  The wait will be long, so I hope there are some left when my order goes through.

+1000 for CMP........

Here are the 2 CMP USGI field grade springfields I got last year.  One's a ~53 the other a November '41.  Both worked perfectly with just a teardown cleaning.

The 53 looks nearly new if you ask me.

BTW, those pictures were taken straight from the CMP box, no clean-up or wipe down at all.

Garand Collectors Association is the easiest route, because they report back to the CMP when you get your membership.
