| Just got back from a fun show. Saw a M1 garand listed as "new" with a Springfield armory box. Is there such a beast? |
| It's Garand, not garland. And yes, there is such a beast. And that's exactly what it is. It's a commercial cast receiver and many times, out of spec. It's not USGI and they usually cost more than a USGI M1. If you really want an M1, go here. CMP sells genuine USGI M1's in several flavors. Whichever you get, you can't beat it at any funshow. You might get very lucky and do better through a private individual, but not likely. |

Another +1 for the CMP. Why buy something new when you can buy something with history for less. Your in VA, your less than 10 hours from the north store where you could go and hand select one yourself! I got my Garand back in 1990 from DCM, took about a year but I think I paid around $200 for it. All 1944 Springfield parts, wood had wear marks from how the rifles were stacked on skids but sadly no cartouches. I left the wood as is, the rifle shoots good enough and I think it adds character. |

Springfield came out with some "new" Garands years ago. They are made with 'GI' parts with the exception of the receiver. The receiver I saw was stamped "made in Australia" on the bottom. It was a good shooter, but for the money, not to mention the history, you will be better served by going the CMP route.

As already said its a Garand made by SAI.
I do not agree with the other poster who said "many times the receivers are out of spec" Never heard of a bad SAI Garand yet, they are good to go. That being said SAI stopped selling them as they couldnt compete with all the USGI Garands available. I would pass on it unless it was in the $700.00 range There are plenty of good Garands availble, I have been thinning the herd lately and may let another go |
| The vendor was asking for $1500 (!!!). Since I knew nothing of the beast I didn't really even consider it. Interestingly enough, I saw a bunch of "collector" grade HRA M1s for $1200+. Again, I know little about identifying M1s so I walked away (not knowing about ME/TE, matching parts, or even if it was a real "collector" hahaha). My in-laws live in Cleveland, and I've often thought about CMP but I don't think I meet all the requirements for purchasing one. |

Because they were "new" made guns, they were always pricier than the USGI Garands that were around. I think that is why Springfield stopped making/selling them. They couldn't compete. If you want a Garand you should go to the CMP, as was previously mention and get at least a Service Grade rifle. That $900 difference in price will buy a lot of ammo to shoot with. |

Its very simple to qualify: Are you a Veteran or over 60, LEO, have a Curio Relics license, certificate for hunting license course, shhot in a match, or have Range Officer sign off? Also need to be a memeber of a club. $14.00 will get you a full years membership in the M1 Collectors Club |
