This might seem really dumb, but how does the gas adjustment work.

Does turning to the right open, or close the gas system?

Clockwise rotation = increased gas to the operating mechanism (less gas vented).

Counter-clockwise rotation = decreased gas to the operating mechanism (more gas vented).

So if your running weak, and not cycling, go clockwise right? What's a good number to start out at. With the cost of ammo I'd prefer to limit shooting until I get it

It's easiest if you don't try to remember and just look at the gas adjustment ring.  There's a little cutout near the gas block side of the ring, angled so that as you turn it one direction, the cutout covers more of a gas vent hole, but turned the other way the cutout covers less of the whole.  The more of the hole that is covered up, the less gas escapes, so the more there is to push the piston and the harder the gun will cycle.

Got it. my first range session I had a hard time getting it to run, but alot of that is contributed toward the '50s surplus spanish ammo.

I need to ger to the range ASAP
