Going to bite the M1A upgrade bullet... for my SA Scout What are the performance differences between all the different Sadlak gas pistons? Is there any benefit at all from these pistons over my stock piston. For starters I'm getting a Sadlak Op Rod Spring guide, extractor and a new rear site. Also I want to get a Smith vortex to get rid of the silly piece that SA put on. Any input would be appreciated. Ranchitecture out |

I went with the TiN coated Sadlak NM pistons, and I am very satisfied. It is a hard-surfaced, corrosion resistant, long life, and precision built piston. I can't say what is in stock at this moment, but I have encountered the above piston, the above piston without TiN coating ("polished"), and the TiN coated piston with machined groove. The grooved piston, which, while obviously well-built and perfectly suited for some types of shooting, is not what I was looking for. I wanted to stay within the specs of what I would put on a fighting rifle, not competition rifle use. |
Are there grooved and non grooved pistons? I dropped a friends new USGI grooved piston onto the slab and need to replace it. His is the only one I have seen, so I'm interested to know what else is available and if there are different applications.

The grooved ones I read are for match shooting but supposedly not for all around use. My only guess is the longetudanl groove bleeds off some of the gas from the match shooters hot loads or heavy bullet loads to save the op rod the abuse. The grooved pistons can give reliability problems when shooting standard usgi velocity ammo from what I read on M14 forums take it for what is worth as far as internet wisdom. I asked which piston I should get for a build and was told to get the standard USGI one. The good upgrade is the op rod spring guide. Smooths the cycle out supposedly. SoS |
