Who else is using this? How has it been for you?  I went through a couple 50rd boxes today and every single one had a sonic crack. RAR 22LR and SiCo Sparrow. Switched over to a mag of CCI Standard and it was back to air rifle quiet. Very disappointed with it. No chrono present, but the other guy noticed the same thing from a couple bays down. Much louder than the bulk Blazer in pistols and 4.5" 15-22.

Did shoot a box of the Gemtech 187gr 300BLK as well, and it was as quiet as the three different 220gr we had with us.

We use these in all of our tests and sell it local. I have not heard of this before. Several reviewers have shot it also and not experienced this. Bad batch or lot maybe?

We use it as well for reviews.  I've never had any that acted that way... I would suspect a bad batch.

I've shot a ton of it...no issues.   Isn't made by CCI?

Never had an issue here either. Bad luck maybe?
8/16/2016 5:33:26 PM EDT

I use it in a pistol and 16" rifle ... no problems all stayed subsonic.
8/16/2016 5:49:04 PM EDT
[#6]
Definitely could just be a problem with a small lot/batch, but there's definitely an issue.

There was guy at the pawn shop the other day that bought case of them and was experiencing the same thing.

Suppressed but with a supersonic crack, every time.

I've gone through a few bricks of it with no issues.

I can't remember offhand, but is there a lot number on the boxes?

Pilot 2 on a 16" CZ452 with no problems like you described.  I personally wasn't happy with the accuracy and went to CCI Quiet.  Much slower but great accuracy and great varmint medicine.

I've been through almost 2 cases.  maybe had 3 or 4 rounds that seemed a little louder/borderline supersonic, but overall, it's great ammo, and my preferred subsonic .22

Same thing with mine--same rifle, same can, supersonic crack.  Same thing with a warlock 2.

Gemtech subs are all I shoot. I haven't had any go supersonic in my PWS.

[#13]
I haven't had that issue with Gemtech, but I've only shot about 50 rounds of it.  I've got three more bricks though.  I'm also wondering if you got a bad batch.  I'm still shooting up a couple bricks of RWS subsonics I've had for a while.  They've all been consistently subsonic out of my Mist-TD.

16" barrel?

If you're close enough to Charlotte, you can have a box to test.

Yes 16". I'm two hours south of you. Thanks for the offer though.

I shoot a lot of the Gemtech 22LR and I love it. Very accurate and reliable.

It stays subsonic in all of my rifles except one.... I have one Ruger 10/22 (the #1230 Tactical with 16.12" CHF barrel) and the Gemtech rounds will have a supersonic crack about 90% of the time. I don't quite understand it, since I have other 16-18" barreled rifles that don't have the issue at all. But this one rifle will cause most of the rounds to be supersonic. It shoots great but the rounds have a crack to them in this gun only. I have  no explanation as to why.

Perhaps differences in bore or chamber diameter? I remember reading somewhere that people were experiencing velocity increases with tighter bores and/or chambers.

Might be a good idea to contact CCI with your lot number.    Ive burned up at least two bricks of the 42 gr Gemtech subsonic ammo.   Its been subsonic 100% of the time with my Ruger American Predator .22 and Spectre 2 can.

My RAR is 18".
My FVSR is 16" and was noticeably quieter than the RAR with same gemtech subsonic ammo and can.

Sent Gemtech an email...figured that's a decent place to start. Especially since I bought it directly from their site.

That's kind of what I assumed. It has to be something with the gun/barrel, so I would think the chamber or the bore is just pushing it over the edge of super sonic.

I shot two boxes out of a recent brick. Nothing went super, but to be honest they have nothing over on CCI Standard which is my go-to. To be honest,  I think that Gemtech ammo is manufactured by CCI for Gemtech unless someone knows different. Kinda like Nosler brass by Norma.

I believe its the bore. As I understand it, CHF barrels tend to produce higher velocities then a button rifled barrels of the same length because the CHF process creates cleaner, more consistent bore and rifling.

They replied late yesterday that they'd not had that issue in their testing, but would like to know if I could send them a box of mine for them to test.

Quiet for me, but not very accurate. CCI subs shoot much better in my .22s. I will try and dig up the comparison I did.

I just bought 6 bricks of this stuff and 10 bricks of the CCI SV.  I'm anxious to compare them both.

Well, just got back from the range testing Gemtech Subsonic 22LR

Dedicated AR, CMMG bolt/barrel
Warlock Surpressor

Once I adjusted the scope for shooting high, I ate a hole in the middle, and I was shooting pretty quick, and my trigger needs to be upgraded.  Gemtech subs look good to me

Have shot thousands of rounds with no probes with no cracking, multiple pistol and rifle hosts and 6 different 22 cans. Ironically, I do get some fte's when I shoot it thru my ported Gemtech mist which definitely prefers standard velocity ammo.

Asking me? Or asking Gemtech.

I didn't see any marking on the box. I have a replacement brick on the way, but still waiting on the call tag to return this one.

Haven't shot one out of the 2nd brick I already had to see what happens.

FINALLY got my Gemtech Outback IIT and mounted it on my son's M&P-15/22 yesterday. Shot 50 rounds of the Gemtech subsonic .22 last night and zero sonic cracks. Also shot 50 rounds of CCI 40 grain subs and Winchester 40 grain subs with no issues

Is this a question for Gemtech???

Has Gemtech ever said anything about their findings? I shot 50 rounds today through a Savage FVSR and Dead Air Mask and thought it was pretty loud. For those that have had trouble what was your lot number? Mine is C01X32.

Big Waylon,

If you take an individual box of 50, look on the bottom side, white side with little writitng, there will be a lot number imprinted.  You may have to angle the box in the light to see it.  I had to take a piece of paper and a pencil to scribble and find the lot number.  Very light impression.  Example lot number I have is H16X27.

Mine was already sent back and I got a replacement brick. Never heard anything back from them.

I did save a couple rounds of the brick I sent back and shot it again with the replacement brick and some CCI SV. I didn't notice near as big of a difference the second trip.
