I am getting into the 50 cals and have chosen the Barrett M82a1.  What are the best optics for this rifle?  How about ammo, I ordered 300rds of ball from Sportsmans Guide--seemed like an ok deal.  Anywhere else to get ammo that is cheaper?  How about the API ammo?  Are their any neccesities that I will need for this weapons platform?  Looking forward to responses.

I am also considering a purchase.  So, any info will be appreciated.

Not sure, it came in 100rd boxes in links.  Looks like it is the reman stuff for $120...did I do bad?

Nah. I've heard better things about the FN ammo, but missed out on it.

I bought an M82A1 a couple years ago.  It took about 5 months to get it from Barrett once ordered.  I had an FFL friend order it and saved over 1K.  It was worth waiting for to save that money.  I order most of my ammo from Ammunition Store
I usually go with the Talon, it seems to be decent for general purpose, but if you want accuracy then you need to spend more.

It comes with an Otis cleaning kit, but I find it easier to use a bore snake.  I threaded the end of the weight on the bore snake to fit the Otis cable to pull it through the barrel because the rifle is too heavy to pick up each time to allow the weight to drop on it's own.

I put a Springfield Armory 6x20x56.  It could use a little more magnification.  I also changed the grip to a Hogue ar15 grip, it uses the same unmodified grip.

I have an 82A1. Mine has a Leupold 8.5-25x scope that works fine. Barrett's literature specifically states that you should not use foreign surplus ammo due to poor quality control and mishandling. I have several boxes of Mitchell's Mausers .50cal ammo but when that's gone I'll start reloading it myself.

put a nightforce or schmit and bender / there the only ones that have been proven to hold up to the recoil. others will, but eventually will lose its sightening over time.

Actually, S&B was NOT on the list of scopes that survived the official FCSA test a few years ago.  The top 3  were:

*Nightforce
*Leupold MK IV
*(late model) Super Sniper

Um, dude...I think you're missing something. The point of owning a .50 is so that whatever you shoot DOES turn into paste. Or powder. Or mist, whatever.

but for a civilian application, when will a target be at the range of say 500-1500m away that youll want to blast with that? certainly not a human. i did see someone mention some live game but hell a smaller gun would do the trick. now if you are talking bears or rhinos or something just huge like that i can understand but most of that huge stuff are found on other continents.

Did you ever consider that they might actually be FUN to shoot and you don't really "need" one or have to have a "practical application". I bought my 50 just because I wanted one, no other reason.

It is pretty obvious you have never shot anything with one. It makes a half inch hole in about anything you shoot. Don't believe everything the VPC tells you.

+1, I bought my Barret M82A1M about 4 months ago from Knesek Guns. It was ready for me to pick up when I was home for my 2 weeks of leave as I'm currently deployed overseas. He's got some good packages set up with the rear monopod, locking knob, 2 mags etc.......www.knesekguns.com

In reguards to a scope I think the 22x Nightforce is probably the best bet for these. Why have a long range weapon if you can't see out to the end of it's reach? They also can have the BORS mounted on them although who knows if that widget is going to be worth it.........

The only thing a .50 turns to soup is prairie dogs (not from personal experience but from watching a few videos)

The CDI (chicks dig it) factor.

Get a chick to fire one! They leave a wet spot when they leave.

Seriously, they are a real hoot to shoot. Plus it really pisses off the libs when they know you have one. The doctors where my wife works are 99% libs. They stroke out when they ask me what I do for a living.

I want one because I have the rite to own one. A rite that I fear I may not have much longer. Plus I think they would be fun as hell to shoot and have. unfortunatly Ive never had the chance to try one.

I was in pretty much the same situation. Needless to say the build quality far surpasses how they look in the pictures and it met all my expectations......

I don't remember the 2nd amendment saying the people have to "need" a particular type firearm in order to have one. Go away troll.

(to ripoff the Volvo car commercial) Barrett. Buy it for looks. Buy it for life.

It is, above all else--as Boston puts it--"the Solothurns of today". It's is an investment that will pay dividends down the road in many, many ways. God bless you for making the sacrifice and investing in our Second Amendment. And I truly mean it.

I do not know if you will be purchasing a Barrett, but know that Mr. Ronnie Barrett is one of the staunchest Second Amendment supporters of any firearms manufacturer out there, bar none. He puts his money where his mouth is, and I have seen NO ONE put it on the line like Mr. Barrett. He attributes his success to us, not the military, because it was the "unwashed masses" who got him going in business before the military even considered using his firearms. Mr. Barrett fears a world where his products can only be bought by .gov and .mil types, for good reason.

If you can swing the cash, consider any one of Barrett's fine line of .50's. Support Barrett, 'cause he certainly supports us. He just plain "gets it" like no one else in the firearms business.

I bought an M82A1 for the simple reason that it is the coolest looking non NFA rifle available.  That was good enough reason for me.  I had them do a simple warranty repair and they paid the freight both ways.  I could not be happier.
