A relative of mine gave me this Winchester safe. I did a little research and found out it was made in September of 2000 by FireKing Security Group in New Albany, Indiana. Good safe company? It has bolts on all four sides of the door (7 bolts on each side and 3 on top/bottom). The door is about 1 inch thick. Omega Point Labs states a fire rating of 30 minutes @ 1550 F.... which I'm not too worried about b/c I live right near the fire department.

I know you get what you pay for, but in this case I didn't pay for anything and I don't know what I have. Can't beat FREE! Is it any good? What was it selling for new? What's it worth now? The safe moving company said it was a good safe and Winchester safes are no longer made in the USA, but I wanted to get some opinions on here. If any additional info is needed feel free to ask.

I was thinking of adding Palusol Fire Seal seen on newer safes and also add LED rope lighting. Thoughts?

Most people have not heard of Fire King, yet they are one of the largest safe manufacturers in the world along with AMSEC and Sentry.  They are a big company that likes to gobble up little companies, and for awhile, owned Granite Security.

The safe that you have is one of the last Granites built in the US.  It's certanly worth free, and it's not a bad safe.  I am not familiar with all of their models off the top of my head, but I don't recall any with doors that thick.

Thanks for the info. The guy that was moving my safe commented that the door was really thick. You can really feel the weight of the door when opening and closing it. Very heavy.

A little bit of research, and I found out that Cobalt (the old gun safe manufacturer, not the newer importer using the same name) was also involved at some point with the Winchester name.  I have seen a handful of Cobalts locally, and they are very well built with heavier bodies and doors.

I would need to look into it a bit further, but that may be what you have.  Could be a Cobalt with the Winchester name on it.

I contacted Winchester and they said they did not have my serial number on file and they thought my safe was made by Meilink. I contacted Meilink and they said to contact FireKing. I contacted FireKing and they had my serial number on record.

Cobalt was purchased by Meilink.  Meilink was purchased by Fireking.  At one point Granite was owned by Fireking, and then sold off again.
