I am going to the CMP very soon and need advice as to what to look for or avoid as I look to pick up a rack or field grade rifle. I do know about checking the muzzle and throat but is there anything else in particular I should be looking for? |
take a few shop rags and rubber/vinyl/latex gloves, everything is greasy, they have gauges (throat and muzzle) and will loan them to you, or measure them for you, look at op rods and gas cyl for finish, if it looks good it may gauge good, (or at least my naked dane did last year) the nice thing is you can give your potential a good once over, (i'm not sure if they will let you break it down, but i doubt it) VS mail order which is luck of the draw!! That is one of my favorite days is going to the North store. I would suggest bringing gauges if you have them or you borrow there's. Also a magnfying glass if your eyes have a few years on them. From there on it just depends on what you are looking for. I like the milled trigger gaurds and a decent stock. If you are getting a shooter they can help you out also. If you are going to send it out for a re-park look at the woodless danes and buy a CMP stock set. The magnifying glass comes in handy for seeing the proof marks and barrel #'s. Have fun Chinook3 ask them about a local M1 Garand dealer nearby. He has a shop behind the house and use to be their armorer, a great source of info. He will check out your purchase and give you some ideas about what you have. |
| Check the crowns on the muzzel I've seen more than a few up there that looked like they were used for a hammer. Check stock fit, action should not move forward or back nor side to side, Grab the front handguard and hold the stock by the pistol grip and pull, the push and see you you can feel the action moving in the stock it should not move. Check the sights for excessive wear on serrations, crank it up almost all the way, using you thumb try to push the aperture down it should not move, if it moves down easily pass on that one. Watch for cracked handguards, stocks, When you find one with a barrel that's to your liking ME and TE wise, go over to the table by the counter and use the cleaning rod and a clean patches (supplied by the CMP) and push a couple of patches through and then using a bore light (bring one) LOOK DOWN THE BORE !! look for rust, pitting, excessive wear, scratches, look and see that the rifling goes ALL the way to the end of the barrel. just because it guaged good dosen't mean the barrel is good, always look!! Check to make sure all the little parts are there, sling swivels, stacking swivel, buttplate, Anyway, hope this helps, Have a great time while you're there, I hope you get a good one! I know I have!! |
