I am looking to change my M16 to a commando type setup. Besides colt who else makes a nice 11.5 upper that can handle suppressed fa fire.
Thanks |
| BCM or DD if you don't want to go with Colt. I use an H2 buffer in my M16 lower with carbine stock and it runs great with 10.5 inch LMT Mk18 upper and 11.5 inch Colt 933 upper. The mk18 upper sees pretty high volume suppressed use. I've never tried an h3, as I've found the h2 gives a nice (subjectively) controllable ROF. |

Is a colt worth the extra money? That is what I run now. Depends on what you're doing. They're not the only ones that can build a reliable shorty - but I've not found a lemon. I have three Colt 11.5s. All perfect. Well, one is now toast, but still runs the Wolf. You can spend even more on some boutique upper. If 100% gtg reliability is important - believe it or not, I think the pony is the least expensive option. If this is just a range toy, destined to be toast, I would be fine with a M1sales, BFI, etc. Sam |
| I ran a few thousand rounds through a CMMG 11.5" upper with mostly good results, but I sold it off after the cyclic rate picked up significantly due to gas port erosion ( upper was sold with full disclosure). I now have a BCM 11.5" and its great. Never a malfunction, and the cyclic rate is more consistent than with some other uppers I have. |

..........but I sold it off after the cyclic rate picked up significantly due to gas port erosion ( upper was sold with full disclosure). This brings a good point for anyone considering buying a "used" shorty. The gas port is very easy to assess using a simple magnifying lens. When they erode, it's from the bore inward. So the port will take on a jagged, cratered look. There is no way not to notice this - unless you don't look. A test drive may point to the erosion, but ROF will depend on ammo/buffer/spring/carrier used. My toasted 11.5 still runs reasonable with rifle stock and Wolf. Sam |

I have had trouble with my BCM 11.5" SBR upper on my M16 RR. I think it's a buffer issue. What buffers are you guys running? I'm using a Vltor A5. It got great reviews, and I already knew that a rifle-length system worked with my Colt RR and BCM 11.5". Thanks, Mrs. Santa, for paying such close attention to my Christmas list. |
