What do you need it for?
For quick grids and distance traveled I really liked my garmin foretrex. Whatever model used AAAs. It was not very good for navigating to points. For a distance/speedb regular watch function, I had a forerunner. Amazon has it on sale for a refurb. Not good for precise navigating, perfect for distance/speed stuff. For work, Garmin Foretrex 401 is what you want. UTM/MGRS grids, elevation, waypoints, distance records. You can customize the menu to show only what you want. It takes about 20secs to find satellites. Two AAAs, it will last about 24hrs left on, easy enough to switch out fresh batteries. You can use it to nav, but you'll have to hold it flat in front of you like a compass. It won't work well for that on a wrist or hanging off your vest. I had mine for 3 years. It should be an issued item. |
