The two biggest players in the game is Garmin and Suunto. Look at the Ambit 3 or the Tactix and Fenix lines.

You can find them right around $300 depending on sales, but they're the leaders.

What do you need it for?

For quick grids and distance traveled I really liked my garmin foretrex. Whatever model used AAAs. It was not very good for navigating to points.

For a distance/speedb regular watch function, I had a forerunner. Amazon has it on sale for a refurb. Not good for precise navigating, perfect for distance/speed stuff. Battery didn't last long enough to use as a 24/7 watch.

No complaints with the Tactix.  Great battery life and rugged.

Pretty much what I'm looking for is rugged and can give me a grid in utm. Don't care about going to waypoints or anything. A barometer and elevation reading would be nice.

Are you still in or is this just for fun?

For work, Garmin Foretrex 401 is what you want.

UTM/MGRS grids, elevation, waypoints, distance records. You can customize the menu to show only what you want. It takes about 20secs to find satellites.
Two AAAs, it will last about 24hrs left on, easy enough to switch out fresh batteries.

You can use it to nav, but you'll have to hold it flat in front of you like a compass. It won't work well for that on a wrist or hanging off your vest.

I had mine for 3 years. It should be an issued item.

I second this.  It finds satellites quickly and the menus are easy to use and read.

The only thing I've noticed is the altitude can vary pretty widely from DAGR altitude.  They must use different methods for finding altitude.

I hate the Tactix. Horrible battery life (1 day, 2 if you are lucky unless you don't use ANY GPS). It's is also not rugged. Plastic lens easily scratched and my wrist strap broke.

Additionally the GPS lock time is MINUTES from a cold start. The menus are too complex.

The Suunto is simple, GPS locks on in seconds, you have sapphire crystal available with stainless bezel... far better priduct.
